This position is in the Facilities & Engineering Service at the Loch Raven VA Medical Center, VA Maryland Health Care System and supports the facility and adjoining CBOC's.
The purpose of the position is to perform plumbing/pipefitter work that includes removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems; measuring, cutting, bending, and threading pipe and tile.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Major Duties:
Major Duties: Responsible for pipefitting on patient wards and administrative areas, which includes inspections, maintenance, repair and installation of all pipes related to heating, hydraulic, nitrogen, and oxygen systems, and vacuum systems; and maintenance and repair of heating elements, traps, and associated valves and piping.
Repairs flash and expansion tanks, vacuum. circulation pumps, and radiators.
Performs soldering, brazing or welding repairs and fabrication requiring the use of oxygen, acetylene, arc welding and pipe welding.
The incumbent installs and repairs water, medical gas, compressed air, and other plumbing and piping systems and equipment such as hot water heaters, pressure reducing valves, backflow preventers, hydronic pumps, sewage injection systems, storm water injection systems, drinking fountains, dishwashers, sprinkler systems, waterless urinals, showers, and disposal units.
Inspects, adjusts, cleans, and repairs, medical compressed air systems, vacuum systems, oxygen systems and natural gas distribution systems.
Performs maintenance and repair of exterior and interior waster and sewer lines, waterline, gas lines, airlines, piped oxygen and all appurtenances connected to the system.
Replaces sections of pipe and tile by following exactly previously used routes, openings, hangers, and levels; and reconnecting equipment units to already-installed systems.
Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipe and tile according to measurements specified in work or sketches, or by measurements taken from samples.
Work Schedule: 7:00a-3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD233500 Physical Requirements: The employee is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
The employee works from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard to reach places.
The employee handles, lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds.
