Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of pipefitters at a naval shipyard in Maine, where you'll guide the installation, repair, and testing of temporary piping systems on ships and in the shop.

You'll ensure work is done safely and efficiently, passing on instructions, checking progress, and coordinating with others.

It's a great fit for an experienced pipefitter who enjoys supervising others and has strong hands-on skills in mechanical work.

  • Coordination skills to work with different teams and review documents for accuracy

Full Job Description

You will serve as a PIPEFITTER LEADER (EXPERT) in the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

The incumbent of this position will serve as an Expert Pipefitter leading a group to ensure work assignments are completed. This position is located in the Temporary Services Pipe Shop (99P).

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE, such as: Staging, testing, modifying, installing, and repairing new and existing temporary piping systems and equipment.

Working with various temporary piping systems and equipment, fresh and seawater cooling systems, firefighting systems, gas systems and industrial equipment.

Using numerous types of measuring tools, hand tools, threading tools, drill presses, band saws, grinders, hydrostatic test pumps, transfer pumps, instruments, and other tools and equipment of the trade.

Passing on instructions from supervisors; getting work started; setting the pace; demonstrating proper work methods; seeing that plans, materials, and tools are available; answering questions of workers on procedures, policies, instructions, or other directives; checking work in progress; ensuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed; reporting to supervisors on status of work; and/or answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems.

  • You will work in accordance with developed technical direction including blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing and placement of various temporary piping systems and equipment.
  • You will serve as an expert performing maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, installation, modification, and testing in the shop and onboard ships.
  • You will coordinate work between different entities to ensure efficient work flow is maintained.
  • You will inspect completed and in process work for quality of workmanship and adherence to requirements, specifications, standards, plans and schedules.
  • You will perform reviews of documents associated with completed work and trade processes to ensure they are filled out adequately and accurately before being presented to the supervisor for certification.
