Full Job Description


The Responsibilities of the Piedmont Urban Forestry Specialist:

Coordinate and implement the Urban Forestry Program and activities of the Piedmont Region.

Coordinates the implementation of the Urban forestry Program and activities Piedmont region. Help build urban and community forestry program capacity in municipalities and counties.

Provides technical assistance to municipalities, counties, developers, non-profit organizations, educational institutions and other interested groups.

Provides professional advice in protecting tree growth, aesthetic enhancement, and sediment control to planning groups such as Councils of Government, Chambers of Commerce, and municipal associations.

Coordinates and conducts educational programs for the Piedmont region (e.g. Arbor Day Celebrations, Tree City USA presentations).

Presents program information to interested groups such as planners, city administration, municipal staff, tree board/committee members, utility crews, conservation groups, garden clubs, etc.

Produces and assists in development of educational material related to urban forestry including SCFC U&CF website, Tree Country, and SCFC social media communication outlets.

Secures and maintains files of technical information regarding urban and community forestry resources.

Compiles information for reports related to program accomplishments (e.g. Community Accomplishment Reporting System, SCFC Annual Report).

Assists the supervisor in urban grant projects helping ensure grant deliverables are met; provides assistance with assigned projects and attends meetings as assigned.

Performs administrative duties to include, but not limited to, processing vehicle cost records, performing SCEIS time entries, reconciling credit card statements with receipts, etc.

Ensures appropriate documents are submitted on time for processing.

  • Provides other duties in support of the SC Forestry Commission's mission and strategic plan.
  • **This position has optional work locations in the following counties: Newberry, York, and Spartanburg.**

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in forestry or related field from an accredited college or university and three years of related experience. A master's degree in forestry from an accredited college or university can be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
    • Must become a certified arborist within one (1) year of employment.
    • A criminal background check and drug test are required.

    Qualifications

    • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is preferred.

    Additional Information

    • Position is located in an office environment but requires many work hours outdoors in various types of weather.
    • Must be able to lift 25 lbs., bend, and squat.
    • Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. May require occasional overnight travel.
    • This position is designated as safety sensitive. Position is subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion & rehabilitation monitoring & drug & alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace Drug & Alcohol Testing.
    • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software.
    • Considerable knowledge of the South Carolina Forestry Commission regulations, policies and procedures. Considerable knowledge in the principles and practices of urban forestry.
    • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationships with employees, other agency representatives, and the general public. Must be a highly motivated, team player.
