Full Job Description

All staff physicians assigned to Medicine Service will meet basic requirements and hold a degree of doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy from a college or university approved by the Administrator; complete an ACGME accredited residency satisfactory to the Administrator, meet the physical standards as described by the Administrator and will be licensed to practice without restrictions in a state or territory of the United States.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Administrative: Serves as acting Program manager for hospitalist service (if appropriate) as needed for triaging purposes.

Provides guidance and support to the physicians' assistants and/or nurse practitioners assigned to Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise.

Participates in and attends medical center committees and/or teams as assigned by the Section Chief or Program Manager of the Hospitalist Section.

Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Section Chief or Program Manager of the Hospitalist Section.

II. Clinical: Provides quality patient-centered patient care to inpatients for adults age 18- 65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Section Chief or Program Manager of the Hospitalist Section.

Maintains clinical privileges in the areas of his/her expertise and in all areas required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments/responsibilities within Medicine Services.

Demonstrate sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profIII.

Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management. III.

Academic: (Applies only to staff physicians assigned official teaching responsibilities) Participates in the formal education of the residents, fellows and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc.

Participates in grading sessions for medical students and GME trainees assigned to their services.

Demonstrates and trains medical students/resident, fellows in medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care appropriate to their expertise.

Assists in the development and implementation of education and training programs for medical students and fellows and residents, rotating through Medicine Service and accountable Clinical Services.ession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.

IV. Research: Supports the medical center-wide research mission. Assists in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care when appropriate.

If involved in an ongoing research project, abides by all VA regulations governing research protocols/policies and/or procedures.

Encourages participation in clinical research among other staff members. V.

Additional Duties: Diagnose, treat, and manage patients with acute medical conditions in the inpatient setting according to accepted standards of care. Admit patients to the W.G.

(Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Medical Center in keeping with good clinical practice standards of what would be expected of a Hospitalist physician.

Serve as the admitting and/or attending physician or consulting physician for patients admitted to the Med/Surg wards and ICU.

Provide cross-coverage to all inpatient units as well as residents of the Community Living Center (CLC) Perform medical consultations on patients when requested by the Surgical Service, Psychiatry Service, and Emergency Department providers.

Provide inpatient Internal Medicine services including clinical procedures within your specialty area of expertise.

Complete History and Physicals, Internal Medicine Consultations, Daily Progress Notes, Episodic Care Notes, Medication Reconciliation, and Discharge Summaries as required and in a timely fashion.

Enter orders as appropriate in the electronic medical record. Complete Shift Handoff Tool on a daily basis prior to end of shift for sign-out purposes.

Close supervision and education of internal medicine residents and medical students in all their clinical activities (when applicable).

Participation in educational activities related to the internal medicine. Collaboration with other providers, including advanced practice providers and nursing care providers throughout the hospital.
