This job is for a doctor specializing in anesthesiology who will provide care to veterans in operating rooms, clinics, critical care areas, and pain management at a VA clinic in Garner, North Carolina.
The role involves working with a team to serve around 25,000 veterans in the area through various medical services.

The Staff Anesthesiologist within the Anesthesiology Service is located at the Garner VA clinic in Garner, North Carolina and will deliver care in the operating room, perioperative evaluation clinics, critical care units, and pain clinic.
The Garner VA Clinic offers multi-specialty services, including Primary Care, Mental Health, and Urgent Care, to around 25,000 Veterans across Wake County and neighboring counties in Eastern North Carolina.
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.
Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement: The physician must be board certified in anesthesiology or have comparable training and experience as judged by the Chief, Anesthesiology Service.
For service in critical care medicine or pain management, additional subspecialty board certification or equivalent are expected.
The physician must have demonstrated academic accomplishments included but not limited to authorship of papers in peer-reviewed journals, authorship of chapters in major textbooks, and lectures delivered at local, regional national, or international professional meetings.
The physician must have demonstrated or be working toward national recognition in academic medicine through appointment or election to national anesthesiology and related medical societies.
For physicians whose staff appointment includes research productivity expectations, the physician must secure external research funding, including competitive grant applications, for basic, clinical, or translational research in fields pertinent to the veteran patient, (for example, traumatic injury and pain) The physician must be board certified/eligible, and eligible for an unrestricted North Carolina license.
Physician must be eligible for an appointment as Duke University faculty Preferred Experience: Anesthesiologist with ACGME approved Pain Medicine fellowship who has, or is eligible for, subspeciality certification in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Reference: For more information on this qualification standard, please visit https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/.
Physical Requirements: This position requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling.
Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted. Major Duties:

Additional clinical skills may include diagnostic trans-esophageal echocardiography, critical care medicine, perioperative medicine, and pain management.
Duties may also include, but not limited to: Basic clinical and translational research in areas pertaining to the care of veteran patients.
Acute and chronic pain management, critical illness, surgical anesthesia, and related disciplines.
Provides anesthesia patient care in other areas such as the general operating room, including supervision of residents and CRNAs.
Provides anesthesia patient care in other areas such as the post anesthesia care unit and procedural areas where patients undergo off-site anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
He/she must meet anesthesia-related documentation requirements set forth by Joint Commission and participate in development and implementation of program planning, objectives, and standards essential to delivery of quality anesthetic care in the areas noted above.
Assignments may include on-call coverage of the ICU and operating rooms as indicated by specific training is subspecialty area. Assignments will include night/weekend on-call coverage responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm
