Full Job Description

The Associate Chief of Staff to Medical Specialties/Medical Specialties Service Chief is a management position with responsibilities for the overall performance of the Medical Specialties unit, including resource management of budget and positions.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement.

Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.

PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: Proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools and technologies. Ability to interpret complex diagnostic tests and make informed treatment decisions.

Strong commitment to patient-centered care, with the ability to develop and maintain rapport with patients. Experience in managing patients with chronic and acute cardiovascular conditions.

Board certification in the relevant medical specialty. A track record of clinical excellence, including patient care outcomes, innovative treatments, and adherence to evidence-based practices.

The Associate Chief of Staff to Medical Specialties is a key member of the clinical leadership team and reports directly to the Chief of Medical Specialties Service.

He/she is responsible for assisting the Chief of Medical Specialties of direct management and oversight of clinical and administrative operations within the Medical Specialties unit.

These duties include direct supervision of Physicians, coordination of work schedules, workload and all clinical performance measures.

The incumbent will work closely with other leaders within other departments and facility to ensure optimization of resources in the care delivery model.

Additionally, s/he participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings or committees as necessary or assigned.

The Service Deputy Chief's excellent communication skills are a key competency for the position.

The incumbent will be expected to facilitate communication between departments and will be the primary conduit of information to his/her colleagues and subordinates.

The physician is to perform direct clinical care a minimum of 8 hours per week, as determined by the Chief of Staff in order to maintain clinical expertise in the field.

The position requires the ability to challenge systems and processes to improve access to care and the care delivery process coupled with the ability to think and act creatively and innovatively.

The incumbent promotes effective coordination and support of clinical care by evaluating current and potential patient needs, clinical workload and resources, and special programs/mandates.

Monitors and evaluates the quality of medical services as an integral part of the overall quality assessments and improvement program and assuring compliance.

He/she promotes and evaluates standards of clinical competence and conduct for staff which are maintained through compliance with the credentialing and privileging processes, monitoring and evaluation of clinical practice, peer review, and other appropriate quality assurance activities.
