Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
(NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs.); light carrying (under 15 lbs.); use of fingers, walking 4-8 hours; standing 4-8 hours; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; hearing (aid permitted); working closely with others; working alone; emotional and mental stability required.
Major Duties:
Incumbent will be a member of the Geriatric Medicine Section/Medical Service and will participate in patient care, teaching and administrative activities of the Division, as assigned.
They will function as an independent physician provider, and they will provide medical care in the spectrum of their field of Geriatric Medicine in all aspects of patient care including inpatient/outpatient care.
The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties: Continue and further the development of the Geriatric Medicine Program.
Providing patient care in the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System.
Incumbent will attend on the inpatient consult service, outpatient clinic and other clinical services covered by the Geriatric Medicine Section.
These clinical responsibilities may include patient care activities with or without trainees. Teach medical students, interns and residents in Internal Medicine and fellows in Geriatric Medicine .
Participate in the educational activities oh the Division of Geriatric Medicine , University of Colorado Denver.
Participate in Process Improvement/Quality Assurance projects and other administrative duties as assigned, including Geriatric Medicine Section meetings.
Other duties as assigned by the Chief, Geriatric Medicine Section.
Provide expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Geriatric Medicine as well as in the inpatient wards and emergency department.
The Physician will evaluate, triage consultation for inpatient and outpatient the Geriatric Medicine subspecialty.
They will obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, recommend, order, and evaluate appropriate laboratory testing, and plan and prescribe treatment for patients.
The incumbent will coordinate medical management and care within their discipline with Primary Care providers and other Medical/Surgical services and personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system.
Provide on-call services for the Geriatric Medicine section as assigned. Shares after hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation.
Participate in monitoring the quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care, both at the Section and facility level.
Incumbent will perform administrative tasks as assigned, including, but not limited to peer reviews, Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE), special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the Chief of Medicine/Chief of Staff/ELT.
Participate in the educational programs for section personnel as well as the medical staff. Regular attendance of required team meetings.
Demonstrate ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization.
