Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting pharmacists in a hospital pharmacy by handling drug orders, stocking supplies, filling prescriptions, and maintaining clean storage areas to help provide healthcare to American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

It's a hands-on role in a remote Arizona location focused on compassionate patient care.

A good fit would be someone with basic pharmacy experience or related education who enjoys teamwork and detail-oriented tasks in a mission-driven environment.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level in pharmacy settings, such as recognizing drug packaging needs and assisting with prescription filling under supervision
  • OR a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses
  • OR completion of specialized pharmacy training in the Armed Forces (creditable up to one year)
  • OR a combination of education and experience totaling 100% of the GS-5 requirements
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, drug characteristics, strengths, dosage forms, and systems of weights and measures
  • Ability to order, procure, receive, and store drugs while maintaining pharmacy stocks and cleanliness
  • Proficiency in entering drug information into computerized patient medical charts and operating pharmacy equipment

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience For positions at GS-5 and above: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories.

Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of: Pharmaceutical nomenclature; Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-5: One year of Specialized Experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level.

Specialized Experience includes skill in recognizing appropriate auxiliary earnings and packaging requirements of drugs dispensed and assisting pharmacy staff in filling outpatient prescriptions under a pharmacist's supervision.

OR Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses OR successfully completed pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces which is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience.

OR A combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position.

The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level.

This combination may also include successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces (Course credit is given on a month-for-month basis up to 1 year of specialized experience).

Pharmacy Technician Total Compensation Orders and procures drugs; receives drug shipments, maintains pharmacy storeroom and hospital drug stocks; properly stores drugs.

Enters the correct drug, strength, dosage form and quantity into the patient's computerized medical chart.

Assists pharmacists in filling prescriptions (i.e., typing, filling prescriptions in written and oral forms, etc.).

Operates and cares for various pharmacy equipment; assists pharmacy staff in maintaining cleanliness of main pharmacy, pharmacy storage, and other drug storage areas.
