We are seeking a Pharmacy Student Intern / Medical Assistant Technician I who is motivated to help individuals and families navigate life's challenges and achieve long-term wellness.

This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health, G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital, 220 Faison Drive, Columbia SC 29203.

Under limited supervision you will apply knowledge as a student intern in performing paraprofessional duties and assist the staff in the pharmacy department of the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital in completing, under limited supervision, complex, highly skilled duties involved in the practice of pharmacy. Performs technical tasks involved in the drug distribution process with minimal supervision by a registered pharmacist. Demonstrate an understanding, compassion, and sensitivity to the pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and psychiatric populations served.

Responsibilities for the Medical Assistant Technician II:
  • Preparation of patient medication orders for dispensing. This includes all patient orders, unit stock, automated dispensing cabinet fills, controlled substances, leave and discharge prescriptions and associated documentation, as assigned.
  • Assist with monthly checks for expired medications in drug storage areas. Assist in the ordering and receiving of medications.
  • Repackage medications for verification by the licensed pharmacist. Complete documentation to meet drug recall and inventory requirements.
  • Participate in educational programs, mandatory classes, and demonstrates knowledge acquired through these functions.

    Also participate in annual competency training and assessment ensuring that all specific age group's pharmaceutical care needs are adequately met.

    Maintain compliance as appropriate with Facility Policies and Procedures and Pharmacy Operational Procedures.

    Includes Cultural and Population-Specific Compliance, Corporate and HIPPA Compliance, Harassment-Free Workplace, Time and Attendance Policies.

  • Provide assistance in the delivery and transport of patient medications, leave and discharge medications, unit stock requisitions, controlled substances, and Pyxis refills to G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital (BPH) and Morris Village Drug & Alcohol Treatment Center (MV) patient units.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as may be required to meet emergency situations.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience or training within the specific work area.
Additional Requirements:
  • Must have a valid current registration with SC LLR Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician or pharmacy student intern.
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift/carry/push up to 50 pounds, may be required to lift more during times of emergencies.
  • Ability to stand, walk, reach, pull, push, stoop, bend and climb at least two (2) to three (3) flights of stairs.
  • Must have manual dexterity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with others.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Information

Post hire, employees must have:
  • Be able to pass CPR, MANDT and Managing Agitation in the Psychiatric Setting (MAPS) Certification.
  • Must be familiar with, understand, and comply with all policies and procedures affecting the scope of responsibility as compiled in facility policy and procedure directives and the pharmacy department's operational procedure directives. Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacy operations.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and medications to include use, possible side effects and /or reactions, dosing information, etc.
  • Ability to transcribe and/or interpret medication orders.
  • Working knowledge of Federal and State laws regulating the practice of pharmacy

This position could be considered essential, and the employee may be asked to report to work in the event of an emergency.
