Full Job Description

Employee will be assigned to Environmental Management Service (EMS), VA Medical Center, Chillicothe, OH, assisting the Senior Pest Controller and performs a wide variety of duties in support of the comprehensive pest control program and other EMS functions.

Assists the senior pest controller with the complete integrated pest management program for the facility and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) throughout the area, conducting bi-annual visits and emergent needs visits.

Certification: Must possess a current and valid state Pesticide Applicator certification. Please submit a copy of your certification with your application to receive credit.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Lifts, handles, and moves objects and materials weighing over 50 pounds and carries chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods.

Occasionally moves objects weighing over 50 pounds. Occasionally works in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring manipulation of equipment in awkward positions for prolonged periods.

Frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods.

May move furniture and equipment and operate high impact pneumatic hammers, as well as various carpentry and masonry tools. Moves and controls heavy equipment.

Performs activities that involve moving furniture, supplies and equipment when relocating hospital activities. May occasionally work on scaffolds or ladders to accomplish cleaning tasks.

Must always be safety conscious when performing tasks to prevent injury and/or damage to equipment or furnishings.

When working outside, often exposed to hot sun for extended periods of time and occasionally to bad weather.

Outside work may be done in marsh areas or under hot and dusty conditions for extended periods. May perform snow removal from building entrances and steps.

Inside work is often accomplished in structural areas with minimum ventilation and/or limited access.

Mixes substances and applies pesticides while wearing respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to nullify the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays that might damage health.

Damage to health may occur if appropriate safety procedures are not followed.

Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles, or face masks for extended periods of time.

May be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, and plants and to wild and rabid animals, soil. bacteria and disagreeable odors. Usually works indoors in a well heated, well lighted building.

Occasionally exposed to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Identifies physical characteristics and various stages of development of common pests.

Controls and prevents infestation of common household, structural, nuisance, and plant pests.

Identifies physical characteristics and behavior of pests to determine the probable infestation locations and apply appropriate insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and fungicides to control infestation.

Inspects common areas of infestation in and around buildings using common hand and power tools to survey structures for infestation. Uses structural blueprints in pinpointing infestation sites.

Applies pesticides and sets traps. Uses pest control methods such as hand baiting, setting traps, and applying general use dusts, sprays, or fogs to control common pests.

Weighs, measures, mixes, and applies limited toxicity or duration pesticides. Uses various manual and power operated equipment sprayers to apply chemicals.

Performs housekeeping duties to clean effected areas. Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm, and Wednesday 1:00pm to 9:30pm.
