These vacancies are with the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity, Apiary Section.

This recruitment is being conducted under the Operation Hire Hawaii (OH-HI) project, a targeted outreach initiative featuring an expedited hiring process, fast-tracking qualified applicants into job opportunities throughout Hawai’i.

Level III - $3,606 to $4,563 per month (SR-11, Step C to I)

Level IV - $3,900 to $4,933 per month (SR-13, Step C to I)

Requirements

This position is located in the Plant Industry Division, Plant Pest Control Section in the Apiary unit.

The Plant Pest Control Branch protects Hawai‘i’s agricultural enterprises and natural resources by an integrated biological and chemical and/or mechanical control of insect, weed, disease and snail pests which are currently established or which may enter the State and cause economic losses. It also protects the State against the introduction of noxious weeds and farmers and growers from the sale of low-quality seeds.

The Apiary Section facilitates the protection and preservation of Hawai‘i’s bee keeping related industries (including honey production, queen bee production and agricultural pollination) from bee pests and diseases. This is achieved through a statewide strategy for biosecurity, survey and detection, pollinator protection, development of certification programs to ensure the export and inter-island shipment of bees are free of bee pests and diseases, fostering the development of apiary related programs, outreach and education, conducting targeted research, which may require collaborating with outside expertise.


The employee will at times work outdoors under various types of conditions, such as, hot, humid weather, inclement weather, biting insects, and other outdoor hazards and must be able to conduct field work in remote locations, work independently & possess good practical knowledge of biological principles and practices.


Pest Control Technician III: Under general supervision, performs fairly complex sub-professional duties and/or supervises pest control aid in support of higher-level professional pest control activities; and performs other duties as required.

Pest Control Technician IV: Under general supervision, perform a variety of complex, sub-professional duties in support of professional pest control activities; and/or supervises a small group of pest control aides and technicians; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants will be placed on the eligible list for ALL levels for which they are qualified.

Legal Authorization to Work Requirement:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

General Experience: Three years of progressively responsible work experience which required the ability to read, comprehend and apply written instructions; follow oral directions; and exercise a high degree of verbal skills for both levels.

Specialized Experience: Two years for level III and three years for level IV of work experience in insect or plant pest control involving the use of standard laboratory procedures in propagating host insects or plants and the collecting and recording of data.

For the IV level, at least one year of the required Specialized Experience must have been comparable to the Pest Control Technician III (see duties summary above).

Non-Qualifying Experience: Experience in a laboratory which involved only the caring for supplies and equipment, e.g., washing test tubes and other laboratory equipment, will not be considered qualifying.

License: Some positions require a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. The immediate vacancy has this requirement.

Special Requirement: Some positions require the ability to lift and carry objects assisted and/or unassisted by another person and/or use of equipment (e.g., hoisting equipment, hand truck, etc.), with or without reasonable accommodations. The immediate vacancy requires the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds assisted by another person and/or use of equipment, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Special Requirement: Applicants must posses or be able to obtain within 3 months of hire, the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/ CPR.
