Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing and issuing building permits, ensuring they follow local rules, and helping customers with questions over the phone, email, or in person.

It also includes handling payments, managing paperwork for designs and utilities, and responding to public records requests.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with experience in accounting or customer service who enjoys working with people and regulations in a government office.

Key Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. (for Permit Technician II) or Associate Degree in a related field (for Permit Technician III)
  • Four years of experience in bookkeeping, accounts payable, and/or accounts receivable
  • Valid Driver’s License from state of residency
  • Ability to review and process building permits, including new, renewal, and vacant structure permits
  • Knowledge of Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and applicable codes/regulations
  • Strong customer service skills for counter, phone, and email interactions
  • Experience handling payments, balancing tenders, and managing documentation like RDP letters and utility releases

Job Description
The function of Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development is to promote and enhance the quality of life of residents, visitors, property owners and businesses of Gwinnett County. The Department accomplishes its mission through programs and services that encourage high quality development as well as maintenance and revitalization of existing neighborhoods.

The Permit Technician position is assigned to the Permitting Section within the Customer Experience Division and is responsible for performing support duties related to fiscal and building permit activities.

Essential Duties
  • Review and process all types of new and renewal building permits, including vacant structure permits
  • Reference and apply the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to ensure all permits meet applicable codes and regulations
  • Provide customer support at the counter, over the phone, and through email promptly and professionally
  • Correspond with applicants, contractors, developers, and business owners
  • Process and manage Registered Design Professional (RDP) letters
  • Assist with utility releases and manage Environmental Health hold and release documentation
  • Provide responses to open records requests
  • Accept payment and balance tenders at the end of the day
Effective 4/11/2023, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program.

Minimum Qualifications

Permit Technician II - Grade B22(1)
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D. AND
  • Four years bookkeeping, accounts payable and/or accounts receivable experience
  • Valid Driver’s License from the state of residency
Permit Technician III - Grade B23(1)
  • Associate Degree in a closely related field AND
  • Four years of bookkeeping, accounts payable and/or accounts receivable experience
  • Valid Driver’s License from the state of residency
