Requirements

In this position, you will be responsible for operating trucks, loaders, and other necessary equipment as required. It is essential to maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with the air brake restriction lifted, enabling you to operate the machinery for which you have received training and certification. During the probationary period, you will be expected to become certified in operating a heavy truck, a loader, and two additional pieces of construction equipment. Daily, you will conduct and document all mandatory pre- and post-operation checks in compliance with departmental and legal standards. When not engaged in equipment operation, you will perform flagger duties to manage traffic control as directed. Your role will also involve a range of manual labor tasks utilizing both motorized and non-motorized hand tools, including shovels, rakes, hammers, and various power tools. You will be responsible for selecting the appropriate tools for each job to reduce wear and prevent breakage, as well as reporting any missing or damaged equipment. Tasks will include cleaning culverts, mowing grass, clearing brush, erecting signs, digging ditches, and repairing guiderails and barriers.

Additionally, you will make necessary field adjustments to ensure safe operation and minimize equipment wear, perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance, and demonstrate the operation of assigned equipment to fellow employees. You will assist Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanics with repairs and maintain accurate equipment records. Your duties will also require you to operate various manual and foot controls, utilize seat belts, and manage tire chains on dual wheels. A critical aspect of your role will be to foster a safe work environment for yourself, your colleagues, and the public by adhering to safety protocols and using appropriate protective gear. You will need to remain vigilant about your surroundings to help mitigate risks and hazards, promptly report any personal injuries or equipment accidents—including near-misses—and seek appropriate treatment to prevent further injury. Your responsibilities will also include making visual observations and manual adjustments as necessary to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment.
  • Work hours vary from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM; Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver’s License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position requires that the Manual Transmission Restriction (E) restriction is removed.
  • This position requires the operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All positions require possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • All employees must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
