Job Description

Summary

This part-time role involves traveling to schools and homes across Iowa to teach and support students who are blind or visually impaired, helping them learn skills and develop personalized education plans.

A good fit would be someone passionate about special education with teaching experience, comfortable with daily travel, and eager to work in teams with parents and school staff.

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

Primary Function:

  • In collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and using an itinerant model, the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) provides appropriate support and/or instruction to students with visual impairments, in their local schools and home settings.
  • Formulates appropriate educational objectives, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction.
  • Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically.
  • Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams; involved with evaluations; educational planning; development of Individualized Educational Plans (IEP); program implementation. Provides written reports and documentation. May lead IEP meetings.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required.

Candidates must meet State of Iowa teacher licensure requirements with an endorsement in visual impairment by the time of appointment.

Candidates possessing a special education endorsement may also qualify but must complete the visual impairment endorsement within three years of appointment (financial assistance available for necessary coursework).

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in education and experience working with students who are blind and visually impaired preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary will be determined by the successful applicant’s educational and teaching experience.

Position Details:

School-year appointments. Service regions cover multiple Iowa school districts. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis required. Criminal and other relevant background checks also required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners: 
    1. School Psychologist; or 
    2. School Counseling; or 
    3. Speech Language Pathologist.
  2. All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility; and 
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license. 
  3. All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field; and 
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate.
