Job Description

Summary

This temporary park ranger job focuses on managing off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation areas in the California desert, where you'll educate visitors on safe and legal use, monitor trails for compliance, maintain signs, and help with public events or emergencies.

It's ideal for someone who enjoys outdoor work, has experience interacting with the public in natural settings, and can handle physically demanding tasks in remote, rugged environments.

No law enforcement duties are involved, making it a great fit for those passionate about conservation and recreation without needing advanced policing skills.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06, such as public engagement on OHV recreation, monitoring use areas, and addressing non-compliance through education

To qualify for the GS-07 grade level, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service, or comparable experience outside the Federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as experience that demonstrates: Engaging with the public to provide information on Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) recreation, including responsible use, land use plan regulations, permit compliance, and public safety; Monitoring OHV use areas and addressing non-compliance through education and appropriate referral to supervisors or law enforcement personnel; Installing and maintaining OHV-related signage, including route markers, open/closed area designations, and protected areas such as Wilderness and Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACECs); Assisting with or responding to OHV-related incidents or emergency situations in accordance with established procedures; Developing and delivering OHV-focused interpretive and outreach programs, such as safety demonstrations, educational booths, and public engagement events; Supporting the operation and management of OHV recreation areas, including coordinating with staff to ensure coverage during peak visitation periods.

Experience must demonstrate the ability to perform these duties with increasing independence and responsibility.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.

The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations.

Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

Major Duties:

  • Engages with the public to provide information on OHV use, regulations, permits, resource protection, and safety; addresses non-compliance through education and appropriate referrals.
  • Installs and maintains signage throughout the management area including: designated protected areas such as critical habitat, Wilderness Areas, ACECs. Installs and maintains signage related to travel management such as OHV routes and open areas.
  • Responds to OHV emergency situations, and, if applicable, any emergency situation consistent with qualifications and level of care.
  • Develops and presents formal and informal interpretation and outreach programs for the general public. These include but are not limited to: guided hikes, educational booths, demonstrations, kiosk/brochure designs, school visits.
  • Works with other recreation staff to coordinate work across the field office, to include scheduling of work on weekends, holidays and other peak visitation periods throughout the year.
