No assumptions will be made about your experience. To Qualify for the Park Ranger GS-0025-5: You have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level.

Experience performing routine patrol and visitor assistance duties in a recreational or natural resource setting, such as monitoring off-highway vehicle (OHV) areas, providing information and guidance to visitors, enforcing rules and regulations, responding to emergency calls, and reporting incidents or violations.

Experience also includes supporting resource protection and safety initiatives, assisting in the maintenance of trails or facilities, and documenting activities or incidents in official records.

-OR- Education: You Must have a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree, including 24 semester hours of related coursework.

- OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.

The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.

Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads.

Work Environment: Most work will be performed out of doors, in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations.

Work may take place in an extremely remote environment and may require primitive camping and living skills for upwards of two weeks in duration. Indoor duties are performed in a normal office setting.

Major Duties:

  • Engages with visitors on safety and authorized activities; patrols facilities for compliance and permit monitoring; assists staff and partners; answers inquiries; and addresses non-compliance through education and referrals.
  • Presents a variety of formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
  • Works on projects identified in the annual work plan; including construction, and maintenance of trails, campsites, and other facilities. Identifies opportunities for, and works with volunteers and volunteer groups.
  • Assists with monitoring and maintaining facilities and equipment; installs and maintains signage for protected areas (e.g., habitat, Wilderness, ACECs) and travel management, including OHV routes and open areas.
  • OHV - Responds to OHV emergency situations and, if applicable, any emergency situation consistent with qualifications. Conducts Wilderness Study Area and dispersed recreation site management.
