Full Job Description

Redcliffe Plantation, completed in 1859, was once the home of James Henry Hammond, three generations of his descendants, and numerous African-American families like the Henleys, Goodwins, and Wigfalls who worked at the site as enslaved laborers and later as free men and women. Now one of the many historic plantations South Carolina has opened to the public, this site encompasses the ambition, wealth and power of James Henry Hammond as well as the injustices and suffering forced on the hundreds of enslaved peoples who were forced to live and work on the land. A successful cotton planter, congressman, governor and senator, Hammond spent his life defending the southern plantation system and his status within it.

Job Purpose and Duties:

To manage Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site, a National Register historic house museum with outbuildings and historic landscape.

1) Effectively trains and supervises full-time staff and directs the activities of seasonal employees with regard to cultural landscape management, interpretation, and programming.
2) Proactively seek to improve your knowledge of best management practices for Redcliffe through presentations and attendance at museum conferences and trainings.
3) Work to accomplish the mission of the Park Service through the core values of Stewardship and Service. Effectively deliver quality customer service and address visitor concerns in a timely manner. Work to ensure that visitors leave with a positive experience and a desire to return. Build positive public relations with the visiting public and local residents. Assure that all interpretive and educational activities are conducted in accordance with established department policies and the site's mission. Performs continued public relations activities, and educational and recreational activities as required.
4) Responsible for managing all revenue and expenditures according to agency standards. Perform all required administrative functions to include providing accurate and timely reports, working closely with members of the Budget & Revenue team and the Finance office. Account for all inventory
5) Assures that all facilities, equipment, and property are maintained to the standards set forth by the Department. Works closely with Resource Management and follows established guidelines for repair, maintenance, and preservation of historic structures. Works to provide a safe environment for park visitors and employees. Maintains and is accountable for inventory of all assets.
6) Conducting research and finding ways to present that research to the public.
7) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.
8) Practice and promote teamwork within the Sandhills Region, throughout the agency, and with external agency stakeholders.


Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in History, Public History, Museum Studies, or related field with two years experience in park operations and management. Master's Degree preferred.

Additional Requirements:

1) Use judgment and discretion in the decision-making process based on established procedures and guidelines. Provide a customer-friendly service-oriented work environment. Experience supervising full-time employees and in customer relations. Able to make public presentations and represent the park and the agency to the public and the press.
2) The ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. The ability to work independently or as part of a team as well as the ability to direct others.
3) Must possess a valid SC drivers license.

Actual Job Location: Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
