This position is open only to current employees of the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
Applicants must serve and pass their six-month probation period in their current position in order to be eligible to apply.

Salary: Range 51 - $39.81 (step one) - $50.47 (step ten) hourly*

Work Location: In-person/telecommuting- The primary workstation for this role is Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC), the paralegal may be asked to occasionally work at the King County Courthouse (KCCH).

This position is required to be in the office two days a week and is required to work on-site for trials, and any office-related duties that require an in-person presence to meet the operational needs of the position, unit, division, and overall mission.

Based on prior experience and training needs, you may be required to be in the office four days a week during the initial training period.


Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour work week schedule, normally Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This paralegal position provides support for a trial intensive workload with a dedicated team that handles cases involving sexual offenses, human trafficking, and felony child abuse cases.

Requirements

  • The paralegal will assist prosecutors in all phases of trial preparation; prepare, process and e-file legal documents; generate, process, print and send witness letters and subpoenas for service
  • Maintain case management system (Prosecutor by Karpel – PbK) to reflect updated witness information, court dates, discovery dissemination, trial and disposition information, and any other important information that needs to be documented.
  • Manage discovery: organize, index, scan, Bates stamp, redact, and prepare voluminous amounts of materials for dissemination that are received in various hard and electronic formats.
  • Manage daily work requests within “MyView” in PbK.
  • Create trial exhibits, redact video and audio recordings, and request and monitor transcript requests.
  • Proficient with Guardify and experienced in redacting discovery materials using tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, Shotcut, Evidence.com, and Audacity.
  • Request jail calls, upload calls in Jail Call Database and review calls as needed; create exhibits, set-up equipment for trial
  • Maintain overview of the status of each assigned deputy prosecutor’s caseload; assist detectives/prosecutors with processing search warrants per KCPAO Criminal Division policy
  • Communicate and serve as a liaison with deputy prosecutors, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims and other agencies; coordinate witness interviews and testimony
  • Arrange travel and housing arrangements; review and interpret legal documents and explain legal procedures to victims, witnesses and the public
  • A successful candidate will possess a desire to learn a wide variety of new skills and be able to adapt to, and work comfortably in, a fast-paced work environment and have knowledge of legal office practices and procedures, particularly in the Criminal Division.

    They will be flexible and possess the ability to work both as part of a small team and independently.

  • Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions.

  • Knowledge of legal office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive), Adobe Pro Acrobat; familiarity with Evidence.com and Prosecutor by Karpel (PbK), KC Script, JABS, SAW, JBRS, PeopleMap/Accurint and other criminal justice programs is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the legal system; possession of paralegal skills, knowledge of legal terminology and application of laws, rules, and regulations, specifically in the criminal justice system.
  • Be receptive to instructions, feedback, and coaching.
  • Must have demonstrated predictable, reliable and timely attendance.
  • Any combination of experience/education/training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
  • Actively participate in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions. Provide support for the Race, Equity and Social Justice policy and principles, work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvements.

Selection Process

Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, qualified bargaining unit members will be invited to participate in a panel interview process.


*Employees with less than 2 years of service will receive .25 per hour less than the hourly salary table due to a mandatory contribution toward the Teamsters Pension Trust that was voted by members of Teamsters Local No. 117.
