The AGO is recruiting for two full-time, permanent positions that each include a two-tier, in-training program.
The selected candidates will start at the Legal Assistant 2 classification, promote to Legal Assistant 3, and promote again to Paralegal 1 upon successful completion of the in-training program curriculum.
The positions are based in Tumwater, WA with our Torts Division.

Base Pay RangesParalegal 1: Range 51: $55,836 - $75,108 (annual).Legal Assistant 3: Range 46: $49,428 - $66,372 (annual).Legal Assistant 2: Range 44: $47,100 - $63,252 (annual).
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Promotional salaries at each stage will be based on Article 42.9 of the WFSE CBA for represented employees and the AGO Salary Determination Policy for non-represented employees.

In-Training Program Details
The AGO Professional Staff In-Training program is a formal on-the-job training program. The program enables the AGO to use defined training steps to train employees to work toward successfully performing the duties and responsibilities of the goal class.
In this job posting, we are considering internal AGO LA1 staff who hold permanent status as an LA1 only and are interested in learning on-the-job with the goal of moving into the Paralegal 1 role.
You’ll gain the competencies and skills needed to successfully perform your duties while being supported by your supervisor, manager, and coworkers.
Upon successful completion of your training and demonstrating knowledge of the position requirements, you will be promoted into the Paralegal 1 level.

Specific to the Torts Division in Tumwater, WA – The Torts Division is the largest division within the Attorney General’s Office, defending Washington State agencies, officers, and employees against a wide range of tort claims and lawsuits.
Our work spans complex and impactful legal matters, including highway design, medical malpractice, employment disputes, allegations of child neglect and abuse, injuries on state property, auto and maritime accidents, false arrests, and allegations of excessive force.
Beyond litigation, we provide legal and risk-management guidance to state agencies and the Office of Financial Management on tort-related matters.
The Torts Division is hiring two in-training Paralegals to join our Torts Division!
Our paralegals are essential to keeping litigation running smoothly by assisting with new lawsuit intake, case tracking, document preparation, trial and settlement support, and case management.
One position will join our New Lawsuits Team and will work closely with Torts Leadership to manage incoming litigation, perform data entry, run reports, process invoices, and provide backup across multiple teams.
The other position will support our Early Resolutions Program, managing case deadlines, drafting and serving legal documents, and coordinating witness interviews, mediations, and settlements for litigation and pre-litigation matters.
Both roles provide hands-on support to attorneys by organizing case materials, tracking and securing critical documents, and maintaining our case management systems, while communicating with clients, witnesses, and vendors.
