Full Job Description

PURPOSE:

South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Math Specialists shall serve as job-embedded, stable resources for professional development in Tier three (3) schools in order to generate improvement in mathematics instruction and student achievement.

SCDE Math Specialists will provide support to Tier one (1) and Tier two (2) schools statewide.

Math Specialists shall support and provide initial and ongoing professional development to teachers based on an analysis of student assessment and the provision of differentiated instruction and intensive intervention.


RESPONSIBILITIES

SCDE Math Specialists will coordinate the effective implementation of the Palmetto Math Project.

SCDE Math Specialists will provide appropriate services to schools so that there will be a cohesive, sustained, intensive and classroom-focused approach that is rigorous, engaging, and relevant for students.

SCDE Math Specialists will provide a non-threatening, open, professional, and collaborative work relationship with district-level school personnel, principals, school leadership teams and teachers.

They will be required to effectively identify the needs of Palmetto Math Project schools to prioritize, schedule, organize, and provide technical assistance so that students achieve grade level proficiency by the end of eighth (8th) grade.

SCDE Math Specialists will travel to Palmetto Math Project schools daily to provide support.


This position is located in the Office of Instructional Supports.

The seven (7) position numbers are: 61156451, 61156456, 61156455, 61156454, 61156453, 61156449, and 61156427.

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree and experience in education, management or business.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education with three (3) years of documented successful experience teaching mathematics.
  • Bachelor's degree in education with five (5) years of documented successful experience teaching mathematics with a minimum of three (3) years of mathematics experience at the State, District or School Level.
  • Valid South Carolina Educator Professional License.
  • Successful experience facilitating adult learning and delivering professional development specific to mathematics instruction.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, and providing feedback about instruction to classroom teachers.
  • Experience leading others in a collaborative process.
  • Experience analyzing and using student achievement data for instructional purposes.
  • Experience in school and district curriculum, and assessment.

Additional Information

Ability to travel on a daily basis required.
