This job involves painting and maintaining buildings and surfaces at a VA healthcare facility in Miami, including preparing areas, applying coats, and handling repairs under supervision.

This position is assigned to the Building and Maintenance Unit, Maintenance and Repair Section, Engineering Service, at the Miami VA Healthcare System (MVAHS).
For he/she shall be assigned maintenance and repair duties as deemed necessary by the Building Maintenance Unit Foreman.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements: Prepare and coat surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places.
This requires them to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
The painting workers frequently lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 5 kilograms (10 pounds).
Occasionally, they may handle materials and equipment that weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and over. The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present.
The painting workers are sometimes required to prepare and coat surfaces outside in bad weather.
Occasionally, they may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Painters are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises.
They may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broke bones. Perform internal inspections as required by Department of Veterans Affairs. Must observe all local and National Safety Codes.
Will move furniture in rooms to be painted, will request assistance when needed.
Must wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos contamination.
Employee generally works outdoors, but works inside occasionally for short periods of time and is exposed to outside weather conditions. Major Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to: Painting one-of-a-kind pieces of casework such as consoles and cabinets. Work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders and rough sketches.
Plan and lay out work to be done, select the proper tools, determine materials to be used and accomplish the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices.
Ensure site is clean of all debris and equipment upon completion of work.
Erect or suspend scaffolding in the performance of duties and be responsible for the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Mix all types of paints such as base coat paint, interior paints and finishing exterior paints.
Skilled in the application of paints in around door frames, window frames, walls as well as molding and base cover and in accenting areas.
