Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas invites applicants for Painter. This position performs a variety of skilled painting tasks in the repair and maintenance of public buildings, facilities and park playground equipment; covers or removes graffiti on residential and business walls.
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas.
The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.
The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
Applicants who are selected for the written test will be notified by email AFTER the application closing date.
Eligible List: You must score 70% or higher on the written examination to be placed on the eligible list.
Selection Process
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable).
Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.
Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/or future openings, which may include part-time or full-time positions.

Experience:
Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level painting experience.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school, including additional specialized training in painting.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S.
Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.
Knowledge of:
A variety of common painting tools and their use.
The terminology and procedures used in painting.
Materials and equipment used in the painting trade.
Color systems and usage.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Properties of paint and the process of mixing paints.
Preparation of a variety of surfaces for painting.
Procedures and methods of hanging wallpaper.
Taping and preparation of Sheetrock for painting.
Skills in:
Estimating material requirements.
Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Communicating clearly and concisely.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Reading and interpreting blueprints and plans.
Mixing and matching paints, oils, and stains.
Using journeyman painting tools and equipment effectively.
Hanging wallpaper properly.
Performing highly skilled and difficult furniture finish work.
Working independently and without direct supervision.
