Career Opportunity

The city of Las Vegas invites applicants for Painter. This position performs a variety of skilled painting tasks in the repair and maintenance of public buildings, facilities and park playground equipment; covers or removes graffiti on residential and business walls.


Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the full journey level class within the Painter series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Received
Receives general supervision and work assignments from higher-level staff.

Examination Process

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas.

The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.

The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.


Applicants who are selected for the written test will be notified by email AFTER the application closing date.


WRITTEN TEST DATE: Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 9:00AM and/or 2:00PM

Eligible List: You must score 70% or higher on the written examination to be placed on the eligible list.

Selection Process

Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable).

Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job.

Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/or future openings, which may include part-time or full-time positions.


Requirements

Essential Functions:

  1. Mixes colors in the painting of walls and ceilings; performs touchups on doors and trim when needed.
  2. Lays out drop cloths. Prepares surfaces to be painted, including taping, mudding, texturing and applying primer; repairs sheetrock, stucco, plaster, concrete and block walls; sands down walls and trim. Applies paint on a variety of surfaces with paint rollers or brushes.
  3. Reads and interprets blueprints.
  4. Prepares and hangs wallpaper.
  5. Covers or removes graffiti on city-owned facilities and residential and business walls using a variety of methods, including painting and general cleaning, specialty coatings or chemicals.
  6. Paints playground equipment.
  7. Paints park buildings, restrooms, picnic shelters, tables and other park equipment.
  8. Estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required.
  9. Refinishes hardwood floors including staining and sealing; sands and repairs holes; lays out gymnasium floors to be painted.
  10. Stencils, letters and numbers doors, signs and pool decks.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment.
  2. Performs general cleanup of worksite.
  3. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience:

Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level painting experience.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school, including additional specialized training in painting.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S.

Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.
