The City of Alameda is hosting a paid Summer Internship Program for High School students. This is a great opportunity to learn about City government, so don’t miss out! Interns will be placed in one of the City's departments and work alongside City staff. Departments include: Base Reuse & Economic Development, City Attorney's Office, City Manager's Office (Communications division and Housing & Human Services division), Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Alameda Municipal Power, Police, and the Rent Program.
ELIGBILITY To be eligible for this program, applicants:
• Must be a City of Alameda resident or attend a school in Alameda
• Must be at least 16 years old
• Must be able to obtain a valid school work permit
SALARY AND HOURSThe City's minimum wage is $17.46 per hour and Interns may work up to 100 hours.APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONSApplicants must first create an account in order to submit an application.

Applications will be reviewed for interest and work/volunteer experience and qualified applicants will be interviewed by departments. Students may apply to more than one department on their application, but must provide a short explanation about why they are interested in each department (supplemental questions).
Internship spots are limited and we cannot guarantee that all applicants will be placed.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS- Departmental interviews will be scheduled for before June 10, 2026.
- Selected interns must attend an in person scheduled HR Onboarding Orientations currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 10th.
- Interns will only work from start date of June 15, 2026 through July 13, 2026.
- This year's internship will be project based and a presentation will be required at the end of the internship, for interns to present to staff and other interns.

The City of Alameda’s Base Reuse & Economic Development Department is excited to offer two summer internship positions supporting economic development within the City.
Duties may include: Supporting the team in coordinating initiatives for residential projects such as Site A, West Midway and a future phase of development.
Supporting the team in coordinating community engagement meetings. Helping organize and research historic files and documents related to Alameda Point.
This would be a good opportunity for someone with an interest in real estate development, Alameda Point, and someone with strong organizational skills.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who have an interest in communications and community outreach.
Duties may include: Develop City communications including social media posts throughout the summer. Create videos about City news, events, and engaging updates. Establish outreach strategies to better engage Alameda's youth with City issues.
Housing and Human Services with 1 OpportunitySupervised by C'Mone Falls, Social Services Manager.
Duties may include: This intern will have the opportunity to learn best practices in supporting vulnerable community members including low-income, homeless, and senior households. Students will support community projects such as harm reduction and substance abuse trainings, shadow homeless outreach and case management services, and learn government processes and complete administrative tasks that will be helpful in a future career in the government or private industry.
Finance Department
Supervised by Carlos Figueroa, Senior Financial Analyst
Duties may include: As a high school intern in a finance department, you may assist with tasks like organizing financial records, updating databases, and conducting basic research. Your responsibilities might include data entry, helping with paperwork, and supporting team members with administrative tasks. You could also be involved in simple projects like organizing files, preparing materials for meetings, or performing basic calculations. You will gain valuable experience and insight into the workings of a finance department, even while navigating privacy regulations.
Alameda Fire Department
Supervised by Dallas Andrews, Robert Caruthers, George Nijmeh, and David Port
Duties may include: The intern should be interested in becoming a firefighter or an individual who has interest in the fire service or emergency management and tasks will include assisting with ISO information collection.
Human Resources Department
Supervised by Noelle White
Intern will have the opportunity to learn various aspects within Human Resources and what it takes to support City employees. Duties may include:
- Employee Appreciation Picnic preparation.
- Open Enrollment Preparation.
- HR website updates and maintenance.
- Creating a slide deck on HR roles, functions, and purposes.
Information Technology DepartmentSupervised by Zachary Baron
This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Intern will work with the latest version of the Arc GIS Pro desktop application as well as our online Enterprise GIS environment.Duties may include:
- 3D modeling in GIS.
- Digitizing new GIS data sets.
- Creating Dashboards, web maps and web applications in Arc GIS Online.
- Creating and using mobile apps for high accuracy data collection.
- Limited Service Desk shadowing with the IT Operations team.
- Light IT Operations exposure.
Alameda Police DepartmentSupervised by Michaelia Parker, Crime Prevention Technician.
- Two student interns will work in a pair from 8 am to 12 pm, Monday through Thursday for two weeks
- Students will rotate through four to six departments within the Police Department
- Excellent opportunity for students who have an interest in police work and/or would like to learn how the police department works
- Some specific exposures will include shadowing a crime scene analyst, working with the Community Outreach Department, observing dispatch, and completing administrative duties
Alameda Municipal Power Supervised by Jonathan Abrami, Administrative Services Coordinator.
Projects may include:
- Project lifecycle - Follow an electrical project through its full lifecycle, from initial design to final energization, gaining insight into how utility projects are planned, executed, and everything in between.
- Engineering exposure - Work alongside our engineering team on active projects, developing technical knowledge and problem-solving skills in a professional environment.
- Field experience - Shadow and observe alongside lineman, inspectors, and engineers to see firsthand how electrical infrastructure is built, maintained, and operated in a public utility setting.
- Procurement and purchasing cycle - Get hands-on experience with the competitive bid process, procurement documentation, and the purchase requisition and purchase order workflow used in public agency operations.
- Administrative & office support - Contribute to day to day operations within a City of Alameda department, building professional skills in communication, organization, and municipal government processes.
Rent ProgramSupervised by Ryan Halpern – Admin Management Analyst
The Alameda Rent Program is offering an opportunity for a student to learn about the City's efforts to promote equity and stability in the rental market. A department of the City Attorney's Office, the program administers local regulations limiting rent increases and requiring relocation payments in certain circumstances. Projects will primarily involve working with the Alameda Rent Registry, verifying and updating information, assisting Rent Program staff in annual registration entry, and notifying new property owners of the City's regulations. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to assist Rent Program staff with identifying and resolving violations of the City's Rent Ordinance, such as invalid rent increases and unpaid fees. This internship is an opportunity for students interested in both housing policy and gaining experience working with a web-based database of public information.MORE ABOUT USThe City of Alameda is a 10.6 square mile island community located in San Francisco Bay. Alameda is just seven miles east of San Francisco, and less than one mile west of the City of Oakland. Alameda is a diverse community with a population of approximately 79,000.
In 1916, Alameda became a
charter city and was one of six cities that were the first in California to adopt the
Council-Manager form of government. Under this form, the City is governed by a five-member City Council. Programs and services are administered by a City Manager. The City Council is elected on a non-partisan basis. Council members serve four-year staggered terms, with two Council members elected every two years. The Mayor is elected to serve a four-year term. The Mayor and Council members are elected at large, and subject to two elected term limits. The City Auditor and the City Treasurer are also elected by the voters. There are no term limits associated with these positions. The Mayor and City Council are responsible for passing ordinances and policies; adopting the budget; appointing citizens to Boards and Commissions; and hiring the three Charter offices of City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk.
As chief executive officer, the City Manager provides the leadership and organizational direction for the operation and management of all City departments. The City Manager implements the policies and ordinances of the City Council, overseeing operations of the City, and appointing the City’s department heads.
Organized under 14 departments, the City provides a broad range of services including police and fire protection; construction and maintenance of streets, parks, storm drains and other infrastructure; recreational and cultural activities, and general government and administrative support services.
