About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with nonprofessional nursing care, such as performing work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing or patient care facility AND six months of specialized experience which includes providing nursing care, such as, feeding, bathing, or transporting patients; maintaining patient medical records; and obtaining vital signs or specimens from patients.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Performs a range of personal care which includes bathing, feeding, lifting, turning, ambulating, transporting patients and providing oral, hair, skin and related hygiene care.
  • Dispenses ice water, meal trays, changes linen.
  • Performs procedures such as enemas, urinary catheterization/catheter care, dressing changes, selected irrigations, sitz baths, naso-oral/tracheostomy suctioning, drawing blood, etc.
  • Assists in examinations/procedures such a physical exams, x-rays, lumbar punctures, biopsies, etc.
  • Recognizes life-threatening conditions and notifies supervisor or charge nurse immediately for corrective action.
  • Collects or assists in collection of specimens.
  • Performs nursing tasks associated with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Assists in the general maintenance of the unit and patient care equipment.
