Full Job Description

This employee will be responsible for assisting the hatchery manager with all pond harvest activities at Bayless Hatchery and Dennis Wildlife Center.

Job Duties Include:
  • Assisting with fish culture activities at Bayless Hatchery and Dennis Wildlife Center.
    • Species to include: striped bass, bluegill, redbreast, robust redhorse, channel catfish, tilapia and American shad.
    • Including culture aspects that pertain to broodstock collection, spawning, pond stocking, fertilization, feeding, water quality monitoring, harvesting and distribution.
  • Notifying supervisor and taking corrective measures in the event of power outage, dissolved oxygen problems or disease issues.
  • Assisting with pond filling, draining, fertilization and aquatic weed treatments in rearing ponds for Phase-I striped bass production.
  • Coordinating with the hatchery manager to fulfill duties in the event of another staff members' absence.
  • Ensuring that Bayless Hatchery and Dennis Wildlife Center grounds, culture-rearing systems, ponds, tanks and raceways, and buildings are neatly maintained and functioning correctly.
  • Performing routine maintenance and preventative maintenance on all equipment that is assigned to the facility including vehicles, tractors, mowers, pumps, blowers and other equipment.
  • Keeping records up to date and assuring all project equipment is serviced at appropriate intervals.
  • Assisting with all data collection and entry at the Bayless Hatchery and at the Dennis Center during pond harvests.
  • Maintaining accurate records and genetics for both brood and offspring.

Requirements

An associate degree in the technical sciences and one (1) year of experience in wildlife or fisheries work; or a high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries work.

Obtain Category 5 Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License withing one (1) year of hire.

Qualifications

Experience in fish hatchery operations, ideally with striped bass and other warm water fish species. Knowledge of aquaculture, fisheries, or agriculture. Proficiency in one (1) or more of the skilled trades (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, etc.). Ability to operate boats, heavy equipment, landscaping equipment, and power tools. Knowledge of data management applications. Ability to work in the field in adverse weather conditions, lift heavy objects and work in and around water. Ability to occasionally participate in overnight travel.
