Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a field technician to manage wildlife habitats, maintain equipment, and conduct surveys on wildlife management areas in South Carolina.

  • Ability to operate chainsaws, weed eaters, mowers, welders, boats, ATVs, and UTVs
  • Skills in collecting and recording field data accurately, including wildlife surveys and biological samples
  • Willingness to work independently, lift heavy objects, communicate with the public, and handle irregular hours in all conditions

Full Job Description

This employee will serve as a field technician for WMAs within Unit 3C.

Job Duties Include:
  • Managing wildlife habitat on Santee Cooper WMA, and assisting on other WMAs within the unit as needed.
  • Preparing and coordinating the maintenance of dove fields on Santee Cooper WMA and assisting on other fields within Unit 3C (Calhoun, Clarendon, Orangeburg and Sumter counties).
  • Assisting in the Management of Hickory Top WMA and Hickory Top Greentree.
  • Managing hunt preparation and operations.
  • Assisting with and conducting field data collection and wildlife surveys in a professional manner.
    • This includes but is not limited to: furbearer routes, quail call routes, dove/duck trapping and banding, deer spotlight surveys, dove wing collection and aging, collection of deer, duck, and turkey data cards, biological collection of deer data including age, weight and other samples, wood duck box data collection and maintenance, and accurately answering hunter questions during public hunts.
  • Maintaining agricultural equipment and tractors on a regular basis.
  • Conducting preventative maintenance routinely.
  • Overseeing property and facilities maintenance across the unit.
  • Assisting with the administrative duties associated with the management and operation of the unit.

Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of related experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Qualifications

Ability to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL), pesticide applicator's license, and certified prescribed manager certification. Ability to proficiently operate tractor and attached implements. Ability to work alone, lift heavy objects, accurately collect and record data, communicate with the general public and maintain a positive attitude with others. Ability to make decisions in the absence of supervisory staff, make minor equipment repairs and conduct regular preventative maintenance. Knowledge and experience in planting and manipulating agricultural crops. Ability to operate a chain saw, weed eater, mower, welder, and miscellaneous hand tools. Ability to operate boats, ATVs, and UTVs. Willingness to work in all conditions and work some weekends along with early mornings and late evenings.
