Full Job Description

This position is located in the Police Service at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, NY.

The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, patients, to tow or recover equipment.

The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/13/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements to operate a motor vehicle.

You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.) Physical Requirements: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, controlling and coupling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people.

Considerable effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs.

Operators frequently handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions on public roads and highways and there is exposure to the danger of serious accidents.

The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system. Major Duties:

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: The incumbent will operate (10-53) passenger buses or passenger ambulance buses regardless of gross vehicle weight with a lift modified for wheelchair patients.

The incumbent will perform, operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections and washing vehicle.

The incumbent will perform trips in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut area, at times in heavy traffic to transport authorized VA personnel on long and short hauls.

The incumbent will operate platform, van, stake and dump trucks, fuel trucks, and trash removal trucks which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds.

All vehicles are equipped with air brakes. The incumbent will operate vehicles over uneven terrain, over improved/unimproved roads and through congested areas on both short and long hauls.

The incumbent will perform snow removal duties on a as-needed basis. Performing other duties of a related nature.
