This job involves driving various vehicles like buses, trucks, and ambulances to transport veterans, patients, and cargo around the New York area and beyond, including in heavy traffic and over rough terrain.
You'll also handle basic vehicle maintenance, snow removal when needed, and ensuring safe operations for wheelchair-accessible transport.

This position is located in the Business Office for the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) at the James J. Peters, VA Medical Center.
The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel, or electronic powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, patients, or to tow or recover equipment.
The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The employee exerts moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing, controlling and coupling vehicles which carry heavy loads and a large number of people.
Considerable effort may be required to change tires and take limited emergency repairs.
Operator frequently handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds. Major Duties:
Performing operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections and washing vehicle.
Operating (10-53) passenger buses, ambulette and passenger ambulance buses regardless of gross vehicle weight with a lift modified for wheelchair patients.
Trips are made in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Philadelphia area, at times in heavy traffic to transport authorized VA personnel on long and short hauls.
Operating platform, van, stake and dump trucks, fuel trucks, and trash removal trucks which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. All vehicles are equipped with air brakes.
Vehicles are operated over uneven terrain, over improve/unimproved mads and through congested areas on both short and long hauls. The incumbent will perform snow removal duties on an as needed basis.
