The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) is seeking a Network Specialist who is innovative, highly competent, solution driven, and customer focused. In this role, you’ll be hands-on with everything from configuring workstations and managing Cisco switches to ensuring airtight network security and maintaining virtual environments. You’ll serve as a trusted resource for our staff – supporting PC’s, phones, and applications – and play a key part in keeping our network and infrastructure up to date, secure and resilient.

You’ll take ownership of Windows active Directory, VPN, RDP, MFA, and server environment (VMWare, NetApp, Windows), ensuring systems are patched, backed up and disaster ready.

From troubleshooting to rolling out new hardware and software, your expertise will keep our operations seamless and team empowered.

This position is located in Juneau; however, the position may be required to travel to Anchorage to support our Anchorage Office.

What will you do:

  • Manage, maintain and secure network infrastructure and ACPE IT services
  • Mange, deploy and /or configure workstations, applications, firewall, VM servers
  • Provide computer/network support relating to software and hardware
  • Manage and maintain Windows Active Directory including users, AD Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP services
  • Keep ACPE servers and infrastructure patched and operating systems up to date (Windows, NetApp, VMWare, etc.)
  • Mange user permissions to NTFS files shares, applications and resources
  • Evaluate and install new software applications or hardware
  • Range 20 - Backup to Network Administrator- manage ACPE technology policies, stay up to date with SOA security policies, maintain system and security plans and documentation, configure and monitor server backups, retentions, storage and off-site DR processes.

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Network administration, networking, routing, Cisco switches, firewalls, network attached storage (NetApp), Virtualization technologies, VMWare, Windows Server
  • Microsoft SharePoint & SQL server
  • SOA procurement rules
  • PowerShell desired state configuration
  • Active Directory, Windows PC, software and application support and management
  • SOA telephony products, SOA security policies, technology best practices
  • LAN and WAN environments, backup, recovery and continuity of operations

Skills in:

  • Personal computer
  • Server and application development, management and maintenance
  • Technical systems troubleshooting
  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; dealing with individuals who are difficult or distressed

Ability to:

  • Manage and array of different technologies used by ACPE and its staff
  • Multi-task
  • Clearly communicate with managers and staff regarding project status and initiatives, as well as, security restrictions and reasoning
  • Anticipate, monitor and meet the needs of customers responding in an effective, appropriate manner.

Requirements

Range 18

At least three year’s work experience in a professional network administrative environment AND advanced level skills with Windows PC, Windows Server and Microsoft Office suite.

Substitution:

Advanced level skills with Windows PC, Windows Server and Microsoft Office suite AND

A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or closely related field. OR

Proof of self-learning, independent skill-building, online courses, IT networking podcasts, and bootcamps MAY substituted for two years of experience if shown core competencies can meet the essential duties of the job

Range 20

At least five year’s work in a professional network administrative environment where one year the primary responsibility were lead planning, installations, modifications and administering network environment AND

advanced level skills with Windows PC, Windows Server and Microsoft Office suite.

Substitution:

Advanced level skills with Windows PC, Windows Server and Microsoft Office suite AND

A bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or closely related field. OR

Proof of self-learning, independent skill-building, online courses, IT networking podcasts, and bootcamps MAY substituted for two years of experience if shown core competencies can meet the essential duties of the job

This is a fully exempt job class under AS 39.25.110(11).
