Engineer Associate & Engineering Assistant 3 (OT Eligible)
Juneau: $45.35 hourly
Fairbanks: $44.49 hourly
Anchorage: $43.19 hourly

What you will be doing:
In this role, you’ll help drive the success of Alaska DOT&PF’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) unit, serving on the front lines of Alaska’s transportation response and innovation efforts. Working in a fast-paced environment, you’ll support critical projects and programs that demand sound judgment, rapid problem-solving, and decisive action. You’ll be part of a response team that supports operations during major events such as typhoons, avalanches, winter storms, flooding, and serious crashes—helping deliver timely, accurate traveler information that keeps Alaskans safe and informed when it matters most. At the same time, you’ll play a key role in modernizing transportation operations statewide by expanding and integrating emerging technologies such as Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Remote Weather Information Systems (RWIS), drones, and connected and autonomous vehicle systems. Your work will help prepare Alaska’s transportation network for the challenges of today and the transportation of tomorrow, directly contributing to a safer, more resilient, and more efficient system for all Alaskans.

Who we are looking for:
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of:

• Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
• Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
• Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Special note: A valid driver's license is required.

Requirements

Engineer Associate
Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
ABET accredited college or technical school courses in engineering, architecture, land surveying or a closely related curriculum may be substituted for the non-specific required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month). A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET may substitute for four years of the non-specific required experience.

Engineering Assistant 3
Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:
A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
