Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a meteorological technician for the Navy in San Diego, where you'll analyze weather patterns, create forecasts for ships at sea, and recommend safe routes to avoid storms and rough waters.

You'll use data and models to support naval operations and provide expert advice on weather and ocean conditions.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-10 level in operational maritime forecasting

  • Skills in developing accurate short and medium-range marine forecasts, especially in areas with limited data and extreme weather
  • Comprehensive understanding of naval operational meteorology and maritime forecasting techniques
  • Ability to analyze oceanographic data for forecast verification and issue warnings for high winds or seas
  • Experience using meteorological models and charts to produce prognostic aids and evaluate ship routes
  • Proficiency in providing briefings on meteorology and oceanography for fleet exercises and operations

Full Job Description

You will serve as a METEOROLOGICAL TECHNICIAN in the FLEET WEATHER CENTER of FLEET WEATHER CENTER SAN DIEGO.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following specialized experience: Experience applying extensive knowledge of operational maritime forecasting and expertise in utilizing climatological data.

Experience applying knowledge of climatic regimes and forecast techniques applicable to marine forecasting in all oceanic regions including the tropics, midlatitudes, southern hemisphere, and polar regions.

Experience with the development of accurate and precise short and medium-range marine forecast for locations with large weather extremes and limited observational data.

Experience applying comprehensive knowledge of naval operational meteorology and maritime forecasting.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will serve as the Ship Routing Officer (SRO).
  • You will evaluate recommended routes daily to determine if they continue to be optimum.
  • You will monitor weather patterns and issues marine weather forecasts for ships in port and at sea.
  • You will analyze oceanographic data for verification of forecasts and High Wind and/or Sea Warnings.
  • You will use various meteorological surface/upper air analyses and prognostic models to produce and/or quality control long-range prognostic surface charts for use as forecasting aids for the watch.
  • You will conduct analyses and explore means to improve optimum track ship routing methods through post-route evaluation and study.
  • You will evaluate and improve current techniques used to determine vessel routes.
  • You will provide briefings and advice on all aspects of the sciences of meteorology and oceanography that may impact major fleet exercises and operations.
  • You will select the optimum route for an ocean voyage by choosing the least-time route that avoids meteorological and sea state hazards using long-range meteorological and wave height forecast charts from national sources.
