Job Description

Summary

This job involves providing mental health support to young people held in a detention center, including assessments, counseling, crisis help, and planning for their care after release.

It requires working closely with a team of staff, families, and community services in a secure environment.

A good fit would be someone with a background in youth mental health who is compassionate, organized, and comfortable handling high-stress situations.

Key Requirements

  • Master's degree (MA or MS) in Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Social Psychology, or related field (PhD, PsyD, MSW, or DSW preferred)
  • Current licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), or psychologist in good standing with the State of Indiana
  • Experience providing mental health services to juvenile offenders in correctional or treatment settings (preferred)
  • Strong skills in conducting mental health screenings, suicide risk assessments, and crisis intervention
  • Ability to maintain caseloads, document services accurately, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
  • Basic computer skills and excellent verbal/written communication
  • Flexibility to work any shift; bilingual skills in Spanish beneficial

Full Job Description

This position serves as a Mental Health Clinician for youth detained at the Marion Superior Court Youth Services Center. The clinician supports the development, organization, implementation, evaluation, and coordination of mental health services within the facility.

The clinician maintains current knowledge of evidence-based and emerging treatment approaches and works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to assess youth needs and contribute to the development and implementation of individualized treatment interventions. The role also supports crisis stabilization efforts and continuity of care planning within a secure detention environment.

Requirements

  1. Conducts mental health screenings and suicide risk assessments for youth entering the Youth Services Center and provides supervision recommendations and follow-up as needed.
  2. Provides ongoing assessment and follow-up for youth placed on suicide precautions or cautionary status, including recommendations regarding supervision levels and step-down decisions.
  1. Provides individual counseling, crisis intervention, and group-based services as appropriate to support youth mental health needs.
  1. Responds to behavioral health crises and collaborates with facility staff on intervention strategies to promote safety and stabilization.
  1. Maintains an assigned caseload and documents assessments, services, and progress in the resident management system (Youth Center) and other required reporting platforms in a timely and professional manner.
  1. Completes clinical assessments, develops treatment recommendations, and gathers relevant history to inform individualized care planning.
  1. Coordinates discharge planning to support continuity of care and connection to appropriate community-based mental health services upon release.
  1. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, including court services, medical providers, families, case managers, and community treatment providers, ensuring appropriate communication of clinical status and recommendations.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The successful Candidate shall possess a MA or MS in Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Social Psychology or higher (PhD, PsyD, MSW, or DSW).

Candidate is required to be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, or a psychologist with current and good standing licensure with the State of Indiana.

Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor preferred, but not required. Juvenile Sexual Offender Counselor certification preferred, but not required.

Experience providing services to juvenile offenders in a correctional environment or treatment facility is preferred. Basic computer skills required. Good communication skills both written and verbal.

Affiliation with professional organizations such as the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA), the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling (ACAC), and others related to the position are encouraged.

Must be able to work any shift if needed.

Bi-lingual skills in Spanish would be beneficial, with a salary enhancement for bi-lingual skills available.

The salary for this position is based on applicable experience- base pay is for those with minimal applicable experience.
