Job Description
Summary
This entry-level role involves supervising people on probation or parole who have mental health issues, helping them stay stable by connecting with support services and following program rules.
It's a good fit for someone with a background in social work, law enforcement, or the military who wants to work in a structured government agency focused on rehabilitation.
The job requires training to become a certified officer and includes physical and mental health checks.
Key Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with at least 15 semester hours in social or behavioral sciences, or an associate's degree plus 2 years of military/certified law enforcement experience, or high school diploma plus 4 years of such experience
- Obtain C-1 law enforcement certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy within 1 year of hire (includes 12 weeks of training with 8-week sequestration)
- Pass Nelson-Denny Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary test
- Pass physical ability test (PAT)
- Undergo background check, credit check, cybervetting, driving records check, criminal records check, drug screening, physical exam, and psychological exam
- Maintain knowledge of mental health supervision, programs, policies, and protocols
- Participate in ongoing trainings and maintain Mental Health Certification requirements

Under the general supervision of the Mental Health Program Manager; the specialized mental health agent will serve as the first line of supervision for a caseload consisting primarily of individuals who are living with a mental illness.
Maintain a professional communication network with internal and external stakeholders, advocate on behalf of those supervised to seek/maintain stability.
Maintain effective knowledge of all areas of mental health supervision, programs, policies and protocols. Participate in trainings and maintain all requirements for Mental Health Certification.
