This job involves drawing blood and collecting urine samples from veterans who may be very ill or difficult to work with, processing lab specimens, and helping train others in these techniques at a VA clinic in Georgia.
It's a hands-on role in blood banking support, requiring careful attention to detail in a medical lab setting.
A good fit would be someone with lab experience or relevant education who enjoys patient interaction and works well in a team-focused healthcare environment.
The incumbent performs phlebotomy (venipuncture) and urine specimen collection on patients ranging from minimally to critically ill who may be hard to draw.
Performs therapeutic blood collection which is equivalent to 500 ml of blood collected on patients with various blood disorders.
Assists in training other personnel in proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques. Receives and processes a variety of laboratory specimens.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
For a GS-05 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-04. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service.
An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement.
In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Specialized experience is: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of relatively standardized tests, examinations, and determinations.
The procedures and techniques are well-established but involve many meticulous sequential steps to complete a test; and following written procedures which give carefully detailed instructions on each step of the assigned test and examinations..
OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.
To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have: Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled?

You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above?
Note: only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work requires extensive and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending, walking, stooping, sitting, and stretching.
The incumbent must have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed a weight of 10 pounds.
The incumbent must fully utilize all safety practice and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.
The environment is that of a typical clinical laboratory setting in a multidiscipline medical center with travel to other facilities.

Major Duties:
Major duties and responsibilities will include: Preparation of samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, allocating, etc.
Distribution, storage and delivery of supplies and other materials used for the purpose of phlebotomy services.
Cleaning and restocking the blood collection rooms and areas where collection trays and equipment is stored. Receiving phlebotomy requests utilizing both manual and computerized logging methods.
Recollection of patient specimens when determined by the medical technologists to be inadequate or insufficient to meet the test requirements.
Collection of additional samples as required for the purpose of performing additional requested testing.
Collection of timed specimens such as growth hormone, peak and trough drug levels, and special collection techniques such as blood cultures and transfusion patient specimens.
