About the Position: This position is located at Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

Federal employees in Alaska are currently entitled to receive a 1.49% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in addition to the base salary. This is subject to change.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirement for Medical Technician: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing in a clinical laboratory, providing guidance to laboratory personnel, and performing quality control.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as medical technology or clinical laboratory science.

(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages.

Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS).

  • Execute a variety of diagnostic tests from routine to very complex in chemistry, special chemistry, immunology, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, transfusion medicine and serology.
  • Operate State of the Art elaborate and complex medical laboratory equipment in each section of the laboratory.
  • Assist in the training new personnel and students in each section of the Clinical Laboratory.
  • Perform quality control in each section and verify validity of test results accordingly.
  • Perform tasks ancillary to laboratory operations such as conducting inventories reporting equipment malfunctions, and assisting in area cleanup and related tasks.
