About the Position: This position is located at Bayne Jones Army Community Hospital, Fort Polk, Louisiana.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirement for Medical Technician: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes processing specimens in a clinical laboratory; maintaining or shipping specimens; and preparing reports and/or documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages.

AND Certification Requirement: Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT); Medical Technologist (MT); or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS).

(Copy of certification must be submitted with application package.) Major Duties:

  • Perform a variety of clinical laboratory tests and examinations in the Department of Pathology.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and record transactions associated with the shipment of specimens to referral laboratories
  • Ensure that special procedures for collection and shipment of specimens are investigated and coordinated with the referral laboratory.
  • Monitor the timely processing of special and routine shipment of specimens to ensure the diagnostic needs of all patient care services are met.
  • Ensure that additional forms required for special tests are completed and accompany the specimen.
