Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in registering patients, updating healthcare databases, verifying eligibility, scheduling appointments, and maintaining records (equivalent to GS-04 level)
  • OR four years of education above high school from an accredited business, secretarial, technical school, junior college, college, or university
  • OR a combination of education and experience that totals at least 100% of the requirements
  • Proficiency in using automated systems to enter, manipulate, and retrieve patient data
  • Ability to handle patient interactions in person or by phone, including resolving basic complaints
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Experience with both electronic and paper record-keeping

About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. A recruitment incentive may be authorized. Advance in Hire May Be Authorized.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in Registering patients and updating information in healthcare databases.

Verifying patient eligibility for services. Scheduling appointments. Maintaining patient files and records.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact in person or telephonically.
  • Enter, manipulate, and/or retrieve information and data from various automated systems.
  • Resolve complaints of a local administrative nature and refer other complaints to appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain both electronic and paper patient records.
  • Coordinate and/or schedule patient appointments with various clinics or at other medical treatment facilities.
  • Initiate forms for reporting animal bites in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Inform supervisors of extraordinary and/or unusual situations.
  • Identify possible third-party insurance information for reimbursement of medical services provided on patients.
