Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing and coding medical records in a military hospital, ensuring patient files are accurate, complete, and follow rules for billing and compliance.

You'll use computer systems to update records, assign codes for procedures and diagnoses, and fix any errors in documentation.

It's a good fit for someone detail-oriented with experience in office work or healthcare administration, especially if you're organized and comfortable with data entry.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-04 level (or equivalent), including using office software, collecting data for coding, and retrieving medical records from databases
  • For GS-05: Alternatively, four years of education above high school in business, secretarial, or technical fields, or a combination of education and experience totaling 100%
  • For GS-06: One year of specialized experience at GS-05 level (or equivalent), including updating patient records, inputting data into coding systems, and identifying correct medical codes
  • Familiarity with automated medical record systems and ensuring compliance with regulatory and insurance requirements
  • Ability to perform quantitative analysis on medical records for completeness, accuracy, and compliance
  • Skills in researching and correcting discrepancies in medical documentation
  • U.S. citizenship required

About the Position: This announcement will fill positions located within Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

To qualify at the GS-05 Grade Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing various office automated systems and software; collecting information for coding; retrieving medical records and reports from databases.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages.

To qualify at the GS-06 Grade Level: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes updating patient medical records; gathering/input data from an automated medical record coding system; identifying the correct medical code for each procedure.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Major Duties:

  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements.
  • Perform quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Performs research and coordination to correct inconsistencies or discrepancies in the documentation.
  • Correlate operation codes with diagnosis codes to ensure the most descriptive code is selected when more than one anatomical location is involved.
