About the Position: The incumbent supports Tumor Registry by using knowledge of both standardized and specialized medical records and quality assurance, incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of technical duties necessary for the development, maintenance and analysis of diagnostic and therapeutic cancer data.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing technical support in the processing and maintenance of medical records to ensure accuracy and completeness; entering and validating patient information within the Automated Central Tumor Registry (ACTUR); performing Quality Assurance and Data Validation to verify completeness and accuracy coding activities.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical Coding, Health Information Technology and Healthcare Documentation.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Maintain patient data in the automated system to ensure compliance with tumor registry standard operating policies and procedures and to meet the needs of the users of registry data.
  • Preserve the confidentiality and security of patient data stored by the tumor registry.
  • Maintain all tumor registry files in accordance with applicable regulations and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Approved Cancer Program Standards.
  • Assist in developing and implementing administrative procedures and processes necessary to audit, identify and review confirmed cancer diagnoses.
  • Provide orientation of the Tumor Registry to health care providers, medical record students, new employees, and volunteers.
  • Participates in educational activities of local, state, and national tumor registrar associations.
  • Assist in quality assurance studies in the Tumor Registry and maintain quality assurance of case-finding.
