Under supervision, prepares and positions patients for a variety of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exams for interpretation by a Radiologist.

The ideal candidate for the Medical Imaging Specialist I/II (MRI) position is an experienced, journey-level technologist who independently performs routine and complex MRI studies with advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, and medical terminology, ensuring accurate measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and high-quality diagnostic images.

They expertly prepare and position neonate, pediatric, and adult patients according to approved protocols, adhere strictly to HIPAA regulations, and complete all Imaging Services electronic documentation and billing accurately within the hospital’s electronic medical record.

This candidate communicates with tact, courtesy, and sensitivity, providing clear explanations to reduce patient anxiety and obtain cooperation, while also supporting the training of student technologists and staff from other imaging modalities.

EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification.

Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

APPROXIMATE SALARIES
Medical Imaging Specialist I: $46.28 - $60.70
Medical Imaging Specialist II: $51.06 - $62.07

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency – Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC)

Medical Imaging Specialist I/II - MRI is represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Intermittent, and Extra-Help vacancies for this position only.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbents may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with business needs of the department.

Requirements

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepares and positions patients for examination according to approved modality protocols;
  • Completes the billing process for each patient encounter utilizing all Imaging Services department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;
  • Transports patients to and from the imaging departments when necessary;
  • Assists with training and instruction of lower-level department incumbents in MRI; and
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Medical Imaging Specialist I - Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related

Medical Imaging Specialist II - Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related; AND
Two (2) years of experience performing the duties in
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Necessary Special Requirements:

Must possess a valid CPR certification at time of hire.

Certification listed below are required for the specific MRI modality within one year for Medical Imaging Specialist I and required at time of application submission for Medical Imaging Specialist II:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologists: Completion of an accredited MRI program and have advanced certification from American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification (MR) OR American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT)

DESIRED: Experience in Radiology and/or Computed Tomography

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Duties are performed in an acute care setting and include frequent lifting of and/or transportation of patients by wheelchair or gurney/stretcher; standing for extended periods of time; and exposure to various types of infectious diseases, blood, body tissues or excretions.

Shift assignments may include VCMC and/or Santa Paula Hospital and day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday hours.

Standby/Callback shift assignments are a requirement of Computed Tomographers, Ultrasonographers, Magnetic Resonance Technologists, Interventional Procedures Technologists and the PACS System Administrative Technologist.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of:

  • Anatomy, physiology, physics and medical terminology related to MRI
  • Exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric and adult patients
  • Adherence to HIPAA regulations
  • Documentation required for exam billing processes
  • General imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting.

Skill in:

  • Positioning patients for image acquisition
  • Recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content and scope of examination.

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Perform routing and complex and/or specialty MRI studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics
  • Exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity and respect when explaining procedures to patients
  • Provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation
  • Provide training, teaching, and instruction to lower-level Radiologic Technologists and Medical Imaging Specialists in the same modalities
  • Establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Examinees must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
