The Correctional Health Services Division at the Department of Health and Human Services in Salt Lake City, Utah is seeking to hire a Medical Assistant (MA) with an ability to work effectively with medical staff, officers and offenders.

In this position, the Medical Assistant's (MA's) main role is to provide support and assistance to nursing and provider staff. Administrative duties may include maintaining medical records and facilitate medical appointments. Clinical duties may include, preparing treatment and patient exam rooms and recording patient medical history. Assist the Registered Nurse on duty as needed.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have some experience working in a hospital, nursing, health care clinic or secure patient environment.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and electronic health records.
  • Have demonstrated ability to take and record vital signs; perform venipunctures for laboratory samples, perform point-of-care laboratory testing, transfer and transport patients in a safe manner using proper body mechanics; recognize signs and symptoms indicating distress; and to perform CPR if needed.
  • Have good patient assessment skills.
  • Have good documentation skills.
  • Be detail oriented.
  • Have the ability to work well with medical staff, officers and offenders.

If offered this position, your employment will be contingent upon passing a background check and drug testing. There will be no cost to you for these checks.

This check will include fingerprinting, which will be available at various DHHS locations for your convenience and drug testing at a facility close to your location.

Fingerprinting will be completed prior to your first day of employment.



Requirements

Principle Duties:

Assist nurses or physicians in the operation of medical equipment or provision of individual's care.Check and record vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, blood sugars, weight, etc.

as directed by nursing staff.Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.

Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician or medical staff.Help medical staff examine and treat patients, handing them instruments or materials or performing such tasks as giving injections, removing sutures and changing dressings on wounds.Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing or forwarding to a laboratory.Ensure all related reports, labs and information is filled out and available in patients medical records.Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations; disinfects and cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations.Keep medical supplies stocked, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required.

Properly dispose of contaminated supplies.Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e.

refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, etc.) Qualifications Additional Desired Qualifications include:Knowledge of patient care, personal care techniques, and infection control measures.Knowledge of medications to assist medical personnel.Ability to perform venipunctures for laboratory samples, perform point-of-care laboratory testing and perform sample analyses.

Demonstrated ability to take and record vital signs; to transfer and transport patients in a safe manner using proper body mechanics;; Appropriately intervene in crisis or problem situations.Basic life support certificationAbility to work in a secure/locked environment.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, take initiative, organize duties, and manage time Additional Information State of Utah Medical Assistant Certification is desirable, but not required.

  • This job is NOT public safety certified, and does not require peace officer status or certification.
  • Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
