Job Description

Summary

This job is for an experienced auto body mechanic who repairs and restores damaged city vehicles, including fixing frames, welding parts, painting, and refurbishing interiors to make them look and work like new.

It involves hands-on work in a shop setting, sometimes leading or training junior staff, and requires staying up-to-date with new tools and techniques.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with strong technical skills in vehicle bodywork, who is physically fit and committed to safety.

Key Requirements

  • Experience in frame diagnosis and repairs using electronic measuring systems and specification charts
  • Proficiency in welding and brazing ferrous/nonferrous metals, including MIG welding on aluminum and plastic welding
  • Skills in vehicle painting using HVLP technology and refurbishing interiors with upholstery and detailing
  • Ability to use body repair tools like frame machines, pulling towers, sanders, buffers, and door skin tools
  • Furnish own hand tools and safety shoes

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
We are actively seeking a Mechanic III (Body Shop) who takes extreme pride in performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and complex repairs to City vehicles and showcasing their technical expertise and exemplary ethical behavior.
A Mechanic III (Body Shop) will occasionally serve as supervisor and/or trainer to lower-level mechanics who can make an immediate impact and add value towards the achievement of these goals. The duties of the MECHANIC III (Body Shop) include but are not limited to:
  • Performs all phases of frame diagnosis and repairs using electronic measuring system and unibody & chassis dimension and specification charts.
  • Refurbishes units including complete interior disassembling, upholstery and detailing to return unit to like new condition.
  • Uses frame machine and floor system pulling towers.
  • Keeps track of repair times electronically in M5 and orders parts as needed.
  • Prepares and paints vehicles using HVLP technology.
  • Welds and brazes all ferrous and nonferrous metals. Uses Mig welder on all metals and aluminum. Uses plastic welder and UniSpotter.
  • Uses all body repair tools including sanders, buffers and door skin tools. Uses all related safety gear/equipment.
  • Perform estimates when needed.
  • Stays abreast of current/new technology relevant to the position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Performs housekeeping duties. Observes environmental and hazardous material procedures. Works safely and follows all safety procedures.
  • Stays current on new technology.
  • Must furnish own hand tools and Safety Shoes.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold moisture, air pollution, chemical gases, and substances. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.

This is a FLEET Management Department Position at the Tier I Level.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
High school degree, GED or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Four-year equivalent of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required.
OR
An Associate's degree (at least 18-month program) in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology plus, two-year equivalent of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

Valid Texas Class C upon hire. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Certifications: Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment.

May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification.

May require mobile air (EPA 609) certification.

Aptitude test may be required.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with light or heavy vehicle collision repair experience. ASE Master Certification in body repair or ICar is a highly preferred.

Aluminum body substructure repair experience in ambulance modules is highly desired. Fire Apparatus and general fiberglass body repair experience is preferred.

Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus!

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

SALARY INFORMATION:
Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.

Additional salary incentives may include:
  • ASE/EVT Certification Pay (up to $5,200 annually)
  • Evening/Nightshift Incentive Pay (Up to $3,000 annually)

Pay Grade: 19
