This vacancy is for a GS-1801-12, Marine Inspector located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, USCG MARINE SAFETY DETACHMENT FORT MACON in ATLANTIC BEACH, North Carolina.

To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the federal sector.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis. Reviewing technical vessel design and construction plans to determine compliance with regulations.

Resolving maritime vessel inspection controversies. Identifying hazardous conditions and prescribed corrective actions.

Evaluating the compliance of foreign vessel safety management systems with the International Safety Management Code and/or the International Standards Organization NOTE: All experience statements (i.e., duties, specialized experience, or related applicable assessment) copied from this announcement and pasted into your resume will not be considered as a demonstration of your qualifications for this position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

You will serve as a Marine Inspector and provides technical expertise and leadership in the enforcement of marine safety, vessel inspection, pollution prevention, vessel manning, regulations, treaties, and international conventions.

The MI serves as the civilian resident Prevention Department's source for continuity of previous inspection policies, technical issues, special program support activity and a primary inspection representative with the maritime industry responsible for commercial vessel safety.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: Conducting technical reviews of vessel plans, safety management systems, and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards.

Determining that vessels being inspected have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect.

Ensuring the required inspection documentation is prepared and appropriate orders drafted specifying required changes, repairs or operational limitations for the vessel and its equipment.

Conduct complete vessel examinations under the treaty requirements of the SOLAS or other international conventions.

As the senior expert on complex vessel inspection issues, the Marine Inspector trains, assesses the inspection qualifications and formally certifies the completed portions of on-the-job training for assigned civilian and military Marine Inspectors.

Makes personal contacts with members of the marine industry at levels to schedule, coordinate, and conduct the required inspections.
