Full Job Description

This is an open continuous announcement. Applicants will be accepted on a ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered. The close date for this announcement is Monday, May 18, 2026.

The incumbent is responsible for maintenance and operations of equipment repair duties at the Spokane VAMC Main Campus.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.

Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Screen out element for this announcement is: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

Examples include: Skill in replacing major portions of various cooling units, such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies Knowledge of standard plumbing methods and techniques to measure, cut, bend, and thread pipe and tile, and caulk and seal such things as elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains Skill to remove, clean, reinstall, or replace joints and fixtures, for example, traps, faucets, and unions Knowledge of the refrigeration cycle of a variety of systems Knowledge in riding lawnmowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and other landscaping equipment.

Drivers License SCREEN-OUT: Driving License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a driver's license.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.

Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Major Duties:

Duties include but are not limited to: Maintaining logs and inspect machinery equipment. Trouble shoot and repair industrial pumps and valves. Perform preventive maintenance as required.

Repair steam and chill water systems. Repair plumbing and piping systems. Trouble shoot and repair general mechanical equipment. Operate power equipment including lawn mowers, weed eater, chainsaws.

Operate snowplows and associated equipment. Read and Interpret Mechanical Drawings. Trouble shoot HVAC systems and equipment. Repair minor carpentry items. Operate powered machinery.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 12:00pm 8:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Worker/PD70548A Driving License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a driver's license.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical demands require intermittent lifting of large articles or assemblies, climbing on ladders or scaffolding, and then maintain body balance while working there, reaching and working on overhead items.

Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Incumbent may be required to work in close, hot, dusty, dirty, cold and confined environments.

Incumbent will be exposed to a wide variety of electric and air operated equipment used in the maintenance field. Incumbent works in a safe manner always adhering to station safety policies.

Incumbent must be alert to hazardous conditions and take all necessary action to avoid accidents or unsafe acts. Incumbent uses proper safety equipment in the performance of duties.
