Summary

This temporary job involves hands-on manual work to maintain urban parks and wildlife areas in San Antonio, such as mowing grass, trimming trees, clearing weeds, and cleaning facilities to support the city's wildlife management plan.

Workers will use tools and equipment for outdoor tasks and help prepare sites for events.

Full Job Description

Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for performing manual labor with a focus on implementation of the Urban Wildlife Management Plan within the assigned area. Exercises no supervision.

At the department's discretion, the work location and days/hours may be subject to change.

Work Hours

Shifts will rotate between the schedules below:

  • 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Monday-Friday
  • 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday-Friday
  • 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., Saturday-Sunday
  • 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Saturday-Sunday
Rotating work weeks. Shifts are subject to change to accommodate seasonal adjustments, evening coverage, weekends, and holiday shiftwork based on department needs.

Requirements

  • Utilizes maintenance equipment to perform maintenance duties which may include sweeping or cleaning streets, maintaining shrubs and flowers, clearing weeds and brush, mowing and trimming public areas tree maintenance to include trimming/pruning and performing custodial duties in public areas.
  • Cleans, repairs, and replaces equipment at City parks and facilities.
  • Prepares City facilities for various City events.
  • Participates in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, City buildings, and facilities.
  • Inspects equipment and reports any equipment in need of maintenance or repair.
  • Operates tractor mower, dump truck, and other small equipment.
  • Loads trucks with sand, gravel, or waste material using a hand shovel, lifting and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • One (1) year of experience in labor or maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic Computer Skills.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Ability to walk long distances (5-8 miles a day).
  • Experience operating small engine equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, string trimmers, and blowers.
  • Experience with vegetation maintenance

Applicant Information

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job.

One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months.

One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
