Full Job Description

Incumbent performs recurring building and/or utility maintenance, operation duties, and assists journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers.

Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

Requirements Continued Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Probationary or Trial Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period -OR- 2-year trial period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.

This probationary or trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.

In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.

Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.

In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.

Upon completion of your probationary or trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT): Experience must be demonstrated in at least two of the following trades: Carpentry (constructs, installs, repairs and replace items such as doors, shelves, etc.); Painting (preparing surfaces, determine painting materials to be used and method of application, and painting a variety of surfaces); Plumbing (replace various valves, unions, elbows, fixtures, toilets, faucets and various types of pipe and copper lines, cut and thread pipes, winterize water systems, etc.); Roofing (repairs and patching, tar and paper, metal foam roofs and asphalt shingles); Electrical (repairs including removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, and insulating defective wiring and fixtures; Cement Finishing (building and setting forms for sidewalks and steps, mixes pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing; Masonry (maintenance, measures, determines amount of concrete, sets forms, pours and finishes concrete to blueprint standards and project specifications); Wastewater Plant Operator (monitoring equipment and gauges, performing routine tests, recording the results in reports, collecting samples, adjusting the rate of flow and amounts of chemicals to be used; Water Plant Operator (monitoring pumping equipment, regulating water, reading meters gauges and charts, recording readings and preparing reports).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

The incumbent serves as a Maintenance Worker for the Southeast Utah Group Parks at Arches National Park in Moab, Utah.

The primary purpose of the position is to assist journey-level or other higher graded maintenance workers under general supervision in general landscaping and grounds maintenance, trails maintenance, basic carpentry, simple electrical installations or repairs, basic plumbing work, painting interior and exterior surfaces, and performing a variety of janitorial services.

Operates medium and small equipment for maintenance on gravel roadways and trails. Operates farm type tractors and associated attachments used to mow maintained roadside landscape areas.

Operates trucks up to 13 tons to pick up supplies, transport materials to and from work site, pick up materials from local vendors, or plowing snow as needed.

Arches National Park contains the world's largest concentration of natural stone openings.

Arches, spires, balanced rocks, canyons and fins of colorful red rocks are set against the dramatic backdrop of the La Sal Mountains, rising to over 12,000 feet in elevation.

Due to Arches' close proximity to Moab, which is only five miles away, the park is a very popular destination for tourist from all over the US and the world, with a current visitation of almost 1.5 million annually.

Physical Effort: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury.

Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding.

Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
