Job Description

Summary

This job involves performing basic upkeep and small fixes on park facilities, grounds, and equipment at a National Park Service site in North Carolina, such as repairing picnic tables, unclogging drains, and painting surfaces.

It's a temporary role lasting more than a year, where you'll drive trucks, ride in boats, and use utility vehicles to get around work sites.

A good fit would be someone handy with simple tools who enjoys outdoor work and can handle tasks independently without much oversight.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform maintenance and repair work with minimal supervision (screen-out factor)
  • Experience in minor carpentry, such as fixing picnic tables, windows, hinges, and latches using hand tools

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.

This trial period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities.

Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on such tasks as replacing broken planks on picnic tables, broken windows using precut stock, minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches.

Performs minor plumbing repairs such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints, replaces faucet washers, and unplugs drains using a plunger.

Performs minor painting using brush and roller according to specific instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.

Operates a truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Incumbent will be riding in boats and operate UTV's.

This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition.

Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last.

This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension.

No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
