This vacancy is for aWG-4749-9, Maintenance Mechanic located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, TRACEN CAPE MAY STRUCTURES in CAPE MAY, New Jersey.

Applicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience.

Eligibility will be determined by the relevance, scope, and quality of all experience and training, regardless of where or how acquired.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT ELEMENT) Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.

Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of measuring instruments Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc.

(includes blueprint reading) Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Knowledge of materials National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

This position is located within the maintenance branch of the facilities Engineering Division, U.S. Coast Guard TRACEN, Cape May, NJ.

You will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-09 and be responsible for preventative, emergency, and routine service work as a Maintenance Mechanic in refrigeration, heating ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing trades throughout the grounds.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: Responding to service order calls regarding malfunctioning or inoperable domestic heating equipment, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, kitchen and domestic equipment, shop equipment, and plumbing, utility, supply, and disposal systems.

Diagnosing malfunctions and making repairs to heating equipment and systems by observing and testing units, tracing and locating defects, determining required repairs, and replacing or adjusting components such as safety devices, thermostats, heating elements, switches, and controls.

Diagnosing electrical problems and performing repairs by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures, and testing equipment using voltmeters, ammeters, and related diagnostic tools.

Inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing special and electrically powered equipment including kitchen and domestic equipment, motors, generators, transformers, cranes, hoists, battery chargers, overhead doors, boiler plants, air conditioners, and fire and security alarm systems, using service manuals, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic testing equipment.

Performing maintenance and repair work on heating systems, electrical wiring and controls, refrigeration and air conditioning units, pipefitting systems, plumbing fixtures, and associated equipment using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic test instruments.

Operating a motor vehicle to transport tools, materials, and equipment to work sites, loading and unloading materials, performing required operator maintenance, and completing preventive maintenance and accident reports as required.
