This job involves leading a team of maintenance workers in a VA medical center in Lexington, Kentucky, where you'll assign tasks, train others, and ensure repairs on buildings and equipment keep running smoothly without disrupting patient care.
It's a hands-on role that requires coordinating with other departments and handling tools and materials in various weather conditions.
A good fit would be someone with practical experience in maintenance trades, strong leadership skills, and the physical ability to work in tough spots like cramped or extreme temperature areas.
Incumbent serves as a work leader in the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) shop of Facility Management Service (FMS) at the two (2) division Veterans Affairs Medical Center and assigned to either the Bowling or Sousley Campus.
The incumbent is assigned to one division but may be periodically assigned to the other campus to help gain experience working with various services and systems and to foster teamwork between the two (2) campuses, should the need arise.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Physical Effort: It is necessary that the incumbent demonstrate, instruct, and train the team in all trades in the assigned shop.
Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to the same working conditions as all his/her coworkers. Incumbent must be physically fit.
This includes lifting heavy equipment, bending, stooping, and working Other significant facts: in cramped places for extended periods of time and often works in hot and cold places. Major Duties:
The incumbent selects materials and tools, maintains inventory of supplies, determines techniques and tools required, and coordinates with other services and individuals to ensure patient access to care is uninterrupted.
Incumbent is responsible for the following duties: Issues work assigned through oral or written instruction, current job analysis and standard operating procedures.
Coordinates work with other shops relating to systems or equipment with co-responsibilities.
Reviews production and service to assure that level of work is being achieved, standards are being met and initiates corrective actions when needed. Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
Provides on-the-job training and participates in formal training programs for employees both providing oral instruction and physical hands-on instruction.
Advises the supervisor on matters pertaining to the smooth operation of maintenance and repair projects.
Oversees and evaluates coworker's work performance to ensure supervisor's directions are followed, work is completed safely by the set deadline, and relays information back to the direct supervisor.
Provides recommendations for performance awards, may assist employee with personal problems and/or employee promotions, reassignment, etc.
Evaluates operations and recommends means of improving the efficiency of the shop in manpower utilization and work procedures.
Expedites a preventive maintenance program to complete scheduled PMI and PM activities.
Initiates work orders for maintenance and repair work to prevent service outages and equipment down time therefore minimizing callbacks and overtime.
Prepares daily, weekly, and monthly expenditure report of all materials and parts purchased for the shop and submit via e-mail to the direct supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned.
