The primary purpose of this position is independently work as a leader and sets the pace of craftsmen in providing full performance level Maintenance Mechanics in constructing, installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying structures and items requiring close tolerance fit, structural soundness, fine finishes, and decorative effects.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-4700 General Maintenance and Operations Work Group.

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Ability to lead and implement sound personnel policies, practices, and procedures and knowledge of carpentry, masonry, sheet metal and welding work methods and techniques.

Knowledge of carpentry methods and techniques and skill in constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood structures.

Knowledge of precision carpentry equipment and ability to produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance.

Knowledge of masonry techniques when using brick, block, and stone and skilled in cutting and shaping to complete corners.

Ability to perform decorative brick work throughout placement of brick of different colors to create various designs and patterns.

Knowledge of sheet metal shop mathematics and skill in formulating plans, patterns, and templates involving straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes.

Knowledge in layout and pattern development (including geometric projection and triangulation). Knowledge in assembling, fabricating, and repairing sheet metal systems, components, and items.

Knowledge of a wide range of welding principles, processes, and difficult techniques.

Knowledge of welding standards and how various metals and metal alloys react to different welding processes and techniques.

Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications. Ability to recognize various sizes of bolts, screws, and rivets.

Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures and environmental standards and requirements; and regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.

Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, standing, and stooping.

On-site work typically requires crawling, climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and roof tops.

Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping the more complex items in handling larger and bulkier material.

Requires physical effort which includes prolonged standing on production lines; climbing up and down ladders and scaffolds; working in cramped and awkward positions while installing items; and reaching, lifting, and bending while using hand and powered tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods.

Frequently required to lift, carry, and handle equipment up to 50Pounds unassisted and over 50 pounds with assistance of lifting devices or other workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works indoors and outdoors, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas.

In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment.

At job sites, may be exposed to severe weather conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and are subject to cuts, bruises, burns, and contusions.

Subject to possible burns from electrical shock, cuts, strains, bruises, and chemical irritations. Maybe exposed to lead, radiation, chemicals or carcinogens.

To reduce dangers from these and other similar conditions, employee is required to use proper personnel protective equipment/devices mandated by each occupational series.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.

You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

- Assures that work assignments from the unit supervisor are accomplished by leading craft personal in the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of structural system, passes instruction received from the supervisor to workers.

- Independently leads personnel in applying skilled methods, techniques, and advanced shop mathematics to construct, install, repair, and modify a wide variety of structures.

- Leads craftsmen in masonry maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of interior and exterior surfaces and structures.

- Leads personnel in the development of patterns, cuts, forms, joins, assembles, and installs items and systems which have combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves, angles, and planes.

- Insures (Leads) the utilization of safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

Uses and maintains tools and equipment.
